You're fine. Seed starting season is not a race, and you don't have to do it perfectly to do it well.   Honestly? I'm even doing things a little differently this year — I'm planting mostly herbs, which means I'm starting later than I normally would too. And it's been such a good reminder that gardening is allowed to fit your real life.   So if you're ready to start something (even just one tray!), here are the easiest seeds to start this week:   🌿 The 3 easiest seeds to start right now 1) Basil Basil is fast, forgiving, and one of the most satisfying plants to grow because you'll use it constantly. 2) Lettuce Lettuce sprouts quickly, doesn't need perfect warmth, and is one of the best confidence-boosting crops. 3) Zinnias Not a vegetable — but hear me out: Zinnias are one of the easiest flowers to start, and they make your garden feel joyful fast. Plus they attract pollinators like crazy.   🚫 3 common seed starting mistakes (that almost everyone makes) 1) Overwatering Too much water is the #1 reason seedlings struggle early on. It leads to weak roots and damping off. 2) Light too far away Seedlings stretch toward light. If your light is too far, you'll get tall, floppy seedlings that struggle later. 3) Starting too many seeds This one is so common — especially for beginners. Starting fewer seeds is actually the fastest way to get better results.   ⭐ One simple tip that makes a HUGE difference: Bottom watering If you want sturdier seedlings and healthier roots, bottom watering is one of the easiest upgrades you can make.   Here's why: When you bottom water, the plant is encouraged to pull moisture downward — which promotes roots to grow down instead of staying shallow.   But here's the part most people don't realize: If you have a tray with wings (like ours), the tray is lifted slightly out of the water. That means the roots hit air — and they won't grow down into the water and create that huge tangled mess of roots. I wanted to take a moment to thank you for being a member of the All About The Garden Community.    I started this company with something very simple in mind: helping people grow food.   It began with seed trays, but it quickly became about so much more. I saw how intimidating gardening could feel to beginners—and how unnecessary that intimidation really was. Starting from seed is affordable, healthy, and deeply satisfying, and I wanted to help make it feel accessible instead of overwhelming.   Gardening has become one of the great joys of my life. They grow tall and thin, using a lot of energy just to reach, instead of growing strong roots and sturdy stems.   That's what people mean when they say seedlings get “leggy.”   The fix is simple, and it doesn't require anything fancy.   A small grow light placed very close to your seed trays makes a huge difference. The light should be just a few inches above the seedlings, and you can easily adjust the height by stacking books or boxes underneath the trays as the plants grow. Faster, more even germination means stronger starts and less frustration. Once I started using both grow lights and a warming mat together, seed starting became far more reliable.   I'll be honest — I don't start seeds without them anymore. Those two tools alone remove a lot of guesswork and disappointment from the process.   If seed starting has felt tricky or discouraging in the past, this is a really good place to start improving your results.
