Hey, Most grapplers know they should stretch... But most don't realise that the wrong type of stretching at the wrong time can make your training worse... and potentially increase your risk of injury. Stretching can be used for 3 different purposes: ✅ Recovery ✅ Warming up ✅ Improving flexibility Each requires a different approach: 1. Recovery = long, relaxed stretching Most people think of stretching as holding a position for 30–60 seconds and relaxing into it. This type of static stretching is excellent for: Reducing muscle tension Decreasing stiffness Helping your body recover after training But it's not ideal before training. ⚠️ Research shows that long, passive stretching before explosive activity can temporarily reduce strength, power, and joint stability... which is the opposite of what you want for jiu-jitsu. That's why I recommend doing this type of stretching after class or later in the evening. 2. Warming Up = dynamic stretching Before training, your goal isn't to relax, but to prepare your body to move. Dynamic stretching means moving through ranges of motion instead of holding positions. These movements increase blood flow, raise body temperature, and prepare your body for explosive movements on the mats. 3. Building (usable) flexibility = active strength-based stretching If you want flexibility that transfers to jiu-jitsu, you need to train it like strength. That means learning to contract and control your muscles while they're in stretched positions. This builds active flexibility -> mobility that you can actually apply during rolls, against another person's weight. BTW: you should always be warmed up before doing this type of flexibility training. Let’s look at wrestling, kickboxing, judo for example … They all drill specific movement patterns to understand how techniques work and to build competence and automatic reactions and reflexes… before adding resistance. Most Jiu-Jitsu practitioners are missing a huge puzzle piece… Let’s look at other martial arts, for example... What is LEG DEXTERITY & Why does it matter so much for your Jiu-Jitsu especially when playing guard? As I’m building the Unpassable Guard Blueprint movement program, I’ve been digging into the movement qualities that actually make guard work. Because from a movement perspective, guard isn’t just about technique... it’s about how well you can control your body, and especially your legs. In Module 2 of the program, my black belt coach and I demonstrate a technique based on Lasso Guard and De La Riva. When you break that technique down, it actually teaches a few important movement qualities: Independent leg control Extension and retraction timing Tension control And hip–leg coordination That's what we're gonna work on in MODULE 2. Because when you combine these☝ with the movement we work on in Module 1 (mobility, flexibility, and core control, etc.), your guard technique starts to fall into place much more naturally. After yoga fixed my herniated disks and I could finally start jiu-jitsu… I genuinely thought: “Ok. That’s it. The work is done. My back is fixed forever.” Jiu-jitsu hooked me so bad I actually stopped yoga, strength training and everything else.. so that I can train MORE JIU-JITSU. And this is when I started to have injury... ...After injury... ...After injury. And I just couldn’t figure out WHY! . . . Later on, I understood that when you do something as intense as jiu-jitsu... or lifting heavy weights, your body is more inclined to go out of balance because it’s always under lots of stress and tension. So if we don’t try to balance out that ‘stress’… by releasing the muscles, working on the joints... regulating the nervous system... Imbalances.... Therefore, injuries will keep appearing. . . . So during my 200h Yoga Training in Bali, something clicked in my brain, and I deeply understood THE HUMAN BODY... beyond the human body. And also how it can be kept at a good performance and robust, from the inside out. My BJJ injuries 🫠...

I’ve been wanting to start jiu-jitsu for ages… but my spine had other plans. I want to share my story with you, because if something is going on in your body right now... I need you to know this: it doesn’t have to stay that way. About 7 years ago, I was lying in bed with numbness in both legs… terrified, thinking, “That’s it… my fitness life is already over.” My dad had to stop his sports career because of back issues, so when this happened to me in my 20s, I couldn’t believe it. I had just gotten back into training after quitting judo a few years before… and then I got hit with .. not one, but TWO herniated discs. And as if that wasn’t enough, during a really stressful time, I developed a pretty bad autoimmune disease too.. so basically my body was falling apart. I tried everything.. chiropractors, physio… all of it. It would help for a bit, then the pain would come right back. So the only thing I hadn’t really tried was yoga and meditation. That’s when I started working on my body and my nervous system that way… and I went deep. But after two years of consistent, focused work, I went from barely being able to move my body… to feeling stronger than ever. Yoga built me back up, and it fully healed my autoimmune disease (doctors said that autoimmune diseases cannot heal 😒..). That’s when I could finally start jiu-jitsu! Which, honestly ...brought a whole new set of challenges later 😅 But that’s what I’m going to talk to you about next time.
