I’ve shared these things many times. People still aren’t doing them.
I will continue to share them until you do them.
Animated email icons in Gmail
Results:
* Increased open rates.
* Increased top-of-mind awareness.
* Increased conversions.
For this week, I’m changing my email icon from the moving GIF of my face to a moving GIF of my SEO course, Compact Keywords.
I made the GIF in 3 minutes.
This will show to all Gmail users.
Gmail:
* Has 75% of the US market share.
* Is the primary email platform for over 90% of US startups and 60% of mid-sized businesses.
* Is used by 22% of the global population.
Take your business icon. Upload it to ChatGPT. Tell ChatGPT about your brand and say you want a Veo 3 prompt to animate your logo. Take the prompt ChatGPT wrote you. Upload your icon to Google’s Gemini. Use Veo 3.1 and the ChatGPT prompt to turn your icon into a moving MP4.
Convert the MP4 to a GIF with this: https://cloudconvert.com/mp4-to-gif
Go to your Google account. Upload the GIF.
Wait 24-48 hours for the GIF to propagate through Gmail.
The animated logo:
* Makes emails stand out = increased open rate.
* Makes people who were considering converting, but then forgot, remember that they were considering (lots of potential customers don’t purchase simply because they got distracted and forgot).
* Makes your brand more memorable.
Exact walkthrough doing this here (https://www.instagram.com/p/DSgVdLkiJDJ/) .
Even though I’ve shared this a million times, I still have soooo many businesses joining this newsletter who simply have a static icon. It’s SO easy to do this!
One word subject lines
Results:
* Increased open rates.
If you’ve been a subscriber of this newsletter for a while, you know that I love one word subject lines. PLEASE TRY THEM!
One word subject lines:
* Are dramatically easier to ideate than long subject lines - reducing overthinking.
* Stand out in email inboxes because nobody else does them.
* Provokes curiosity.
* Faster to read, which especially matters on mobile.
* Feels bold and confident without trying too hard.
* Are less intimidating than long subject lines - people assume the email will be easier to consume.
Results of all this are, again, increased open rates.
There’s a reason I’ve been doing one word subject lines every week for years.
Newsletter weekly consistency
Results:
* Increased open rates.
* Newsletter growth.
* Increased trust.
* Increased top-of-mind awareness.
* Increased understanding of your subject matter.
* Increased shots taken.
* Increased conversions.
I’ve sent this newsletter out every week, without missing a single week, for nearly 3 years now.
Every time I consider missing a week (tired, don’t know what to write, another excuse), I remind myself consistency is the most important driver of results, and even if I repeat myself in an email - like in this newsletter - I still have something useful to share.
Again - I’ve shared these things before, but for everybody, in every niche, it takes repeated exposure before trying the new behavior, tip, or converting. So even if you think you have nothing good to share this week, I assure you, you do.
Weekly consistency with a newsletter:
* Manageable.
* Builds trust through repeated exposure and weekly top-of-mind awareness.
* Encourages you to go deep into your subject matter, exploring concepts you wouldn’t have explored before, bringing on new discoveries and epiphanies.
* Turns your content into a habit with your readers.
* Gives you more attempts at selling and more attempts at creating emails people want to share with their friends and colleagues.
* Helps you find your voice.
* Improves your writing fast.
Ideal anchor text ratio
Results:
* Increased SEO authority.
* Increased amount of backlinks Google pays attention to.
* Decreased risk of spam penalties.
Finishing this week's email off with a simple SEO tip.
Did you know Google will ignore some of your SEO backlinks if they don’t fit natural backlink patterns?
Google has all the data in the world and is very good at discerning natural backlinks from manipulative backlinks (ones that are purchased, for example).
If your backlink profile becomes too unnatural, Google starts ignoring your links, reducing your rankings, or even penalizes your site (and now penalties are becoming permanent).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdzl_ZbcY0E
The best is to do marketing that simultaneously builds natural backlinks which increase referral traffic, sales, and awareness (these are THE most valuable backlinks by far).
But if you’re determined to build links fast, this is the universal standard for a natural backlink profile when it comes to anchor text:
Exact Match: 5-15%
Brand Anchors: 30-40%
Title Anchors: 10-15%
Generic Anchors: 10-15%
Plain URL (Naked URL): 15-20%
LSI Anchors (Related Keywords): 10-20%
I’m including this in this week’s newsletter because lately I’ve been seeing lots of companies trying to manipulate Google with blatantly unnatural behavior - and getting DESTROYED (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cwyFAElmw0) .
Unnatural anchor text patterns is probably one of the most common mistakes I see, though.
General rule of thumb is to describe your brand in different ways depending on the context of where you’re included, but always using language that makes you appear like an authority in your topic (https://edwardsturm.com/articles/pagerank-decay-rank-buyer-intent-pages/#topical-authority) .
And please don’t spam exact match anchor text (where your anchor text exactly matches the keyword you’re targeting). This is the most powerful anchor text for getting results, which also makes those new to SEO get carried away with it, giving off unnatural patterns.
Again, if your SEO profile looks unnatural, Google ignores it, or worse, penalizes you.
Sidenote, a lot of people don’t even know Google literally tells you its rules for making sure your website isn’t spam (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DUWXaWijGud/) .
Shoutout!
Shoutout to Dennis Dickmann, who took my SEO course, Compact Keywords, and sent me this six days ago:
You can see Dennis’s first testimonial, from a month and a half ago, here (https://edwardsturm.com/compact-keywords/#dennis-dickmann) .
Getting reviews and testimonials like this are why I do what I do. It’s incredible that I’ve gotten to improve so many lives and businesses.
Thank you again to Dennis.
