#1. From My Inbox: "How do I communicate with someone who's hurt
but refuses to talk about it?"
Stop trying to get them to talk. The harder you push, the higher
the wall goes. Instead, drop the rope. Your job isn't to get
answers now. It's to make it safe to answer later. Swap "What's
wrong?" for "I can tell something's heavy. I won't push. Do you
want company or space right now?" If they say space, honor it.
#2. Communication Tip: 2 types of questions to ask your kids
My son is eight and when I ask, "How was your day?" I'll usually
get some version of "Good" every time. It's not that he doesn't
want to talk. It's that "How was your day?" is almost impossible
to answer. I'm asking him to summarize six hours in one sentence.
Now I ask two types of questions instead.
* Emotion questions like, "Tell me something that made you laugh
today." It's easier to remember the moment you felt something.
* Social questions like, "Who did you sit with at lunch?" When
you ask about other people, kids open up about other people.

Again this week I'll answer another inbox question, give a
communication tip, and share something I'm currently loving.
Let’s jump into our 3 things:
#1. From My Inbox: "How do I keep my emotions from hijacking
high-stakes conversations?"
What do you do when your boss questions your judgment in in a
team meeting? Your face likely gets hot. Your chest tightens. You
open your mouth and whatever comes out has twice the emotion it
needed and half the clarity.
Here are 2 things to help next time this happens:
* Give your brain a quiet self-command. Short phrases that start
with a verb: “Choose steady.” “Lead with facts.” “Listen first.”
Say it in your head as you inhale. It sets the lane before the
words show up. Sounds small. Works big.
* Drop your voice, not your point. When emotions go up, pitch
often follows. When pitch goes up, credibility goes down. Lower
your tone. Slow your pace. Finish your sentence going down, not
up. “I hear what you’re saying. And here’s where I see it
differently.”
#2. Communication Tip: How to respond to "Don't be so sensitive."
Most people either shrink or escalate. Both let the other person
run the conversation. Try this: “I’m not being sensitive. I’m
being direct about what I need.”
Rejects the label. Reframes what you’re doing. Puts the focus
back on the actual issue. If they push: “You can disagree with
what I said. But telling me how to feel isn’t going to move this
forward.”

Hey there,
This week on a run, I realized I've made a lot of progress on my
goal to move more. It wasn't fast or flashy. Just a little more
each time. I'm a firm believer that's how most real progress
works. Not in leaps, but in small shifts that build on each
other. That goes for communication too, and it's what I want you
to focus on today.
Let’s jump into our 3 things this week:
#1. From My Inbox: "How do I respectfully express an opposing
view without creating tension?"
When you disagree with someone, the instinct is to lead with the
disagreement. Don't. Start with where you align: "I'm sharing
this because I know you value honesty." That one sentence tells
them you're not against them, even if you disagree with their
position.
From there, a simple perspective phrase does more work than most
people realize. My favorites are "I see it differently" and "I
take another approach." Both work because you're naming where you
stand (not issuing a challenge).
#2. Say less. Mean More.
This week I want you to remember this: the fewer words you use,
the more you actually say. This is a simple trick we use in the
courtroom. The longer an answer, the more opportunity there is
for miscommunication. Answer their question and only their
question. The shorter the answer, the clearer it is. Every time.
#3. Something I’m Currently Loving - My Daughter's Homemade
Cookies
My daughter has become something of a cookie legend in our house.
Her secret is to melt the butter and use more flour than most
recipes call for to make the cookies chewier. She also likes
"monster" cookies, so we chill the dough first. Then we take big
scoops and roll them into cylinders (she really likes that word
because she's learning 3D shapes at school). Here is the recipe

I was overwhelmed by your response to my new workbook. Thank you
for all the kind words, selfies, and even the live-time
notifications when your book was delivered! I worked hard to
create this resource, and I've been looking forward to sharing it
with you. Your excitement makes it all worth it.
This week I've got another round of 3 things for you: an inbox
question, a communication tip and something I’m currently loving.
Let’s go.
#1. From my inbox: "How do I apply your tips in a situation where
'winning' the argument is impossible and 'connection' is not a
desired outcome for them?"
The goal here is to shift control. Use flat statements that can’t
be twisted, like: “Noted.” “Understood.” Keep your responses
short and in a neutral tone. Make minimal eye contact and give no
explanations. Silence can’t be misquoted.
Define your scope up front and repeat it when they drift: “I’m
not here to change your mind. I’m here to state my position
once.” Then do it, once.
If they get disrespectful, name the behavior and leave: “This
isn’t respectful. I’m done talking for today.” Calm, then gone.
The power move here isn’t persuasion. It’s non‑participation in a
rigged game.
#2. How to Remember What to Say In the Moment
Get rid of the urge to say something back right away. Take ten
seconds. Take a whole minute. Take a whole day. The
conversation cannot happen any faster than you can respond. Try
this: memorize some go-to phrases. Some of mine are “give me a
second” or “I’m thinking”. As long as the other person doesn’t
feel like you’re ignoring them, but you’re choosing your words
carefully, they’ll usually give you the space.
#3. Something I’m currently loving - LMNT
My family has been traveling a lot lately. One thing I’ve learned
is this: If you want the trip to go better, keep everybody
hydrated. When my kids are dehydrated, they get cranky,
forgetful, and restless. And, truthfully, so do I. That’s why

Let’s get into this week’s 3 things:
#1. How do you handle a promise when the other person is not
holding up their end?
When a promise has conditions and the other person is not meeting
theirs, stop arguing about how you feel and go back to what was
agreed. State the promise clearly. Name what has not happened.
Then explain what happens next.
Say, “We agreed that I would do ___ as long as you did ___. If
your part is not done by Friday, I’m ending my part of the
agreement.”
Then, if Friday comes and nothing has changed, follow through.
Say, “Your part was not done, so I’m ending my part of the
agreement.”
That is the key. No extra debate. No long explanation. No second
speech to soften it. Your credibility comes from this: say what
you will do, and then do it.
#2. Choose your circle wisely.
Who you’re around is how you’ll sound. If you’re around people
who interrupt, you’ll find yourself raising your voice to be
heard. If you’re around sarcasm, sincerity will begin to feel
risky. If you’re around people who always think negatively or
gossip or cuss - you’re going to do the same thing. So this week,
try to surround yourself with people who raise your thinking, not
your defense.

As we step into March, I’m making a small change to this
newsletter.
I’m still keeping three things — you know I’m partial to three.
But here’s what you’ll see each week going forward:

Simple. Practical. Helpful.
Let's jump in.
#1. How do I deal with people who repeatedly twist what I say?
People who twist your words feed on extra words. So you give them
fewer.
Start with a calm anchor like, “That’s not what I said.” Then
stop. Don’t explain. Don’t fill the silence. The more you
explain, the more they bend.
If they keep at it, use the loop-and-clarify move: “What did you
hear?” Let them say it out loud. Then you clean it up in one
line: “What I meant was _____.” Keep it short. Downward tone. No
frosting.
Remember: one sentence to correct, one to clarify, one to close.
#2. Create more peace in your day with one word: “Maybe.”
The next time someone does something that frustrates you, instead
of getting annoyed or angry, choose to ask yourself - “maybe”.
“Maybe they are going through a hard time?”
“Maybe they are overwhelmed?”
“Maybe there’s a reason they are rushing?”
“Maybe I’m not supposed to be there?”
It’s not about letting somebody else off the hook, it’s letting
yourself off the hook. You see the bad, and you're choosing to
not let it rob you of the good. So, this week - try that!
#3. Something I’m currently loving - the Strava Running app.
Speaking of new things, I took up running about a month ago. I’m
enjoying my new running shoes and using the Strava app to track
my progress. It’s made running fun. If you’re looking to move
more this spring, Strava is worth a look!

Hey there,
One of the most common questions I get: "How do I advocate for
myself without feeling selfish?" The answer is simpler (and
easier) than you'd expect.
Here’s how to get what you want without pressure, guilt, or a
power struggle:
#1. Start by making them feel heard.
People resist when they feel dismissed. So before you pitch your
idea, affirm them first. For example, "I can see how you came to
that idea." You don't have to agree with their thoughts to
acknowledge them. Making them feel heard before you ever say what
you want lowers defenses and builds goodwill.
#2. State your preference plainly.
Clearly say what you want. Don’t apologize, over explain, or
hedge. Simply say, “I prefer it this way.” Clarity is respectful
and confidence removes confusion.
#3. Offer flexibility without folding.
You can offer a concrete option, yet still keep collaboration on
the table. Phrases like “I’m open to a compromise" show you’re
open without abandoning your position. This makes them more
willing to work toward a solution.
Persuasion done right isn't about winning. It's about creating a
"yes" that feels right for everyone.

Hey there,
Last week, someone emailed me because a coworker talked down to
her in front of the entire team. She didn't know what to say in
the moment, so she just froze. And now she keeps replaying it,
thinking of what she should've said. I told her the same thing
I'm going to tell you.
Here's exactly what to do when someone talks down to you:
#1. Flip the dynamic
When someone is talking down to you, instead of staying in this
inferior position, say that whatever they just told you is
beneath you or below you.
It's as easy as saying: "The way you're treating me right now is
beneath me."
When you do that, you flip that power dynamic. You stay in
control while they have no choice but to change their behavior
for the conversation to continue.
#2. Maintain your position
You can do that by using the words allow and give. For example:
"I will allow you to try that again" or "I'm giving you the
opportunity to say that to me differently." Those are words of
authority and it sends the message that I am in complete control
of how I will be treated.
#3. Reset the terms
This is where clarity replaces conflict. Use the phrase I'm
willing. It sounds like:
"I'm willing to engage in this conversation if you speak to me
respectfully."
"I'm willing to talk with you if we're on the same page."
You're laying out the instructions of how this conversation can
move forward, without threatening, lecturing, or defending
yourself.
And that's how to handle somebody who is talking down to you.
So try that!

Hey there,
Here's the thing about standing up for yourself: most of us wait
until we're so fed up that we either explode or shut down
completely. Neither works well.
Standing up for yourself feels hard because it is hard. But the
people who do it well aren't doing something magical. They're
following a simple framework.
When it feels impossible to stand up for yourself, try this:
#1. Know when it's worth it.
Not everybody is worth getting out of your chair for. Every
little comment doesn't require a response.
Just because someone spews trash doesn't mean you're in the
business of digging through garbage. Save your energy for what
matters.
#2. Stop apologizing for your boundaries.
Eliminate apologies and conditional language before making your
position.
"I'm sorry, but I kind of feel uncomfortable about this" becomes
"I feel uncomfortable about this."
When you apologize before setting a boundary, you're invalidating
yourself. You don't need permission to feel what you feel.
#3. Say no without justifying it.
Get in the habit of saying no without justifying it. When you
start justifying, they're going to start defending against your
justification rather than coming up with a better solution. "No"
is a complete sentence.
So try that!

Hey there,
I was working with a client last week who kept apologizing before
she spoke.
"Sorry, quick question—"
"Sorry to interrupt, but—"
"Sorry, this might be dumb—"
She wasn't actually sorry, she was just talking. And every time
she said it, everyone in the room took her less seriously.
Here's what I told her to stop doing (and what you should stop
doing too):
#1. Stop saying "I'm sorry" when you didn't do anything wrong.
If you mess up, say you're sorry. But if you're asking a question
or sharing a thought, don't apologize for it. Instead, swap it:
* "Sorry I'm late." → "Thanks for waiting."
* "Sorry to bother you." → "Do you have a minute?"
* "Sorry for the long email." → "Here's what you need to know."
It's the same message, but now you're not positioning yourself as
the problem.
#2. Stop pre-rejecting your own ideas.
You know what kills your credibility faster than anything? It's
when you say things like:
"This is probably a dumb question, but..."
"You probably already thought of this, but..."
"I could be totally wrong here, but..."
You're telling people not to take you seriously before they've
even heard what you have to say. Try this instead:
* "Can I add something here?"
* "Here's how I'm seeing it."
* "I have a thought on this."
Now you're offering your idea instead of apologizing for it.
#3. "No" is a complete sentence.
If you need to say no, say no and then stop talking. You don't
owe everyone an explanation. You don't need to justify your
boundaries or apologize for protecting your time. A boundary
isn't a negotiation. People might not like your no, but they'll
respect you for having one.

Hey there,
Want to sound more persuasive? Try this:
#1. Make them first.
Let the person you want to persuade be the first to hear
something, be told something, or share something with.
It can be as easy as “I just had a thought that I wanted to run
by you first.” People love to be first. It makes them more
attentive and more likely to do what you ask.
#2. Anchor with positivity.
Begin your sentence with “Because I know…” and tag a positive
quality about them. For example: “Because I know I can count on
you” or “Because I know you to be a dependable person.”
What you’re doing is anchoring your message to a positive
quality, making them much more likely to follow through.
#3. Use your voice.
You might think you’ve written the perfect email or the perfect
text, but nothing will replace the human connection of hearing
your voice.
So call them—or even better—meet them face to face. You will
always be more persuasive when you use your voice.

Hey there,
When conversations feel tense, your gut instinct is to push
harder. To do more rather than do less. But the more you push,
the harder they fight, and that’s not what you want.
Instead of pushing, I want you to ask defusing questions.
Here’s what they sound like. Begin with:
#1. “Is it unreasonable…?”
For example, instead of telling someone to lower their voice
(which they likely will not do), ask:
“Is it unreasonable to ask us to speak at a lower volume?"
It’s a question that works because they can't argue without
sounding unreasonable and most people won’t even answer it,
opting instead for an implicit “no” by automatically lowering
their voice or whatever you’ve asked.
#2. “Are you opposed…?”
For example, instead of telling someone to listen to what you
have to say, ask:
“Are you opposed to hearing my thoughts?”
It works because it allows them a 'no' response, which is
everyone’s (including my kids) default preference, while making
them feel like they have more control in the discussion.
#3. “Are you against…?”
Same as above, beginning the question with this phrase allows
them to say “no” and still get them to agree with you (which is
some Jedi-like skills!).
For example, you could ask: “Are you against us taking this
conversation elsewhere?” (which needs a ‘no’) instead of “Can we
take this conversation elsewhere?” (which needs a ‘yes’).
And that's how you navigate the conversation when things get
tense.
So try that!

Hey there,
You’re in the middle of a heated argument that’s spiraling out of
control.
Emotions are high. Voices are raised. And neither side is willing
to back down.
Here are 3 simple strategies to stop a heated argument:
#1. Ask, “Is this something we have to agree on?”
The answer is probably “no.” Just recognizing that agreement
isn’t necessary can immediately reduce the tension.
It shifts the focus from trying to convince the other person to
simply understanding them.
#2. Use the emergency brake phrase: “Well, maybe so.”
This phrase is like an emergency brake in an argument.
It defuses the situation by suggesting that there’s a possibility
the other person could be right. And often, that’s all they need
to hear to start calming down.
#3. Lower your voice and slow down your words.
It’s not always about what you say, but how you say it. When
someone starts raising their voice, resist the temptation to
match their volume.
Instead, lower your voice and slow down your words. They’ll
naturally start to mirror your lower tone, bringing the intensity
of the argument down with it.
Use these 3 strategies the next time you find yourself in a
heated argument.
They’ll help you keep your cool and bring the conversation back
to a productive place.

Ever had someone blame you for their bad behavior?
“I wouldn’t have yelled if you hadn’t upset me.”
“You triggered me. What did you expect?”
That’s not accountability.
It’s bait.
And if you’re not ready, it’s easy to take it.
Here are 3 phrases to shut it down without losing your cool:
#1. Respond with, “I didn’t yell at myself.”
Or, “I didn’t insult myself.” “I didn’t gaslight myself.”
This mirrors the moment back to them and makes it crystal clear:
