When Alexander Bell tried to sell his telephone patent to Western Union in 1867, they called it an “[impractical device](https://www.truewestmagazine.com/article/a-bad-call-on-the-telephone/)” and a “toy.” Now we can’t imagine life without it—and I have a feeling AI is next! But until then? Here are three ways to tweak AI so it doesn’t scream “robot” (and your professional secret stays safe 🤫).  1. **Fix your opening sentence. ** AI loves a vague, grandiose opening sentence—it states the obvious while sprinkling in important-sounding words to make you look good. But all this does is bloat your message!  **The solution is simple**. Delete the opener and get to the point: ✖️ “As organizations continue to evolve, the tools we use to communicate play a critical role in our collective success.”  ✔️ “We switched from Slack to Teams. Here’s why:”  2. **Cut the fluff. ** AI likes to pad filler phrases like “This highlights the importance of” and “It is worth noting that” to make your text flow. Not only is it a dead giveaway for AI, but it also slows your reader down. Try this instead:  ✖️ “This demonstrates that our Q3 results were impacted by supply chain delays.”  ✔️ “Supply chain delays hurt our Q3 numbers.”  3. **Put your personality back in. ** AI defaults to a neutral, "safe," and formal tone, stripping your writing of personality and opinion. Don't let it! Go back in, add your voice, and prove there's a human behind the keyboard.  ✖️ “This approach may have potential benefits to the team.”  ✔️ “I genuinely think this would be a night and day difference!”   I saved the most important tip for last! While you can more or less predict the worst case, the best case is a total wildcard (and one that can exceed your wildest dreams). That conversation got me thinking: When **was** the last time I truly felt wonder?  It was [in 2022](https://www.instagram.com/p/CkOuaZCqt2R/?hl=en), when I visited a tiny (three-miles-long-tiny) mystical island off the Western coast of Scotland called [Iona](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iona). Fun fact: Iona has more sheep than people!  I spent that entire weekend in awe—feeling inspired, curious, and aware that the problems I'd been stressed about back home were _so_ much smaller when compared to how beautiful and vast the world is. This isn’t a coincidence: There’s **real science** showing that experiencing wonder can increase [creativity and gratitude](https://ggsc.berkeley.edu/images/uploads/GGSC-JTF_White_Paper-Awe_FINAL.pdf) while reducing [stress and impatience](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25984788/).  But awe doesn’t have to be reserved exclusively for mystical islands. (As much as I would love to relocate to Scotland, Miss Excel HQ can't operate from a place with more sheep than spreadsheets. 🐑) You can find awe in the everyday moments. Entrepreneur Amanda Goetz [pulled together](https://amandagoetz.kit.com/posts/life-s-a-game-finding-awe-in-the-mundane) six ways to find awe in your day-to-day. One example I loved? Going on **awe walks: ** “Once a week, 20 minutes, no podcasts. Look for one thing that makes you feel tiny (big tree, endless sky, city skyline) and one thing that makes you feel the beauty in human connection (people hugging, neighbors helping each other, a barista knowing someone in their coffee shop).”  This idea of pursuing wonder and awe flips productivity advice on its head. Usually, it's all about doing _more_. What if that just doesn’t come naturally to me? _ Fortunately, I’ve since realized that being a compelling storyteller is a **skill** you can practice in small, everyday moments, from your emails to interviews.  Here are three ways to start:  1. **Problem Before Data **💥 Next time you start a meeting or send an email, introduce the **conflict** before the data. “I noticed a dip in new customers in February—here’s what I found” pulls people in so much more than “Today we’ll be talking about the Q1 report.”  Tension is the storyteller's best friend!  2. **Keep a Story Bank 📚** Log small wins, tough conversations, and “aha” moments in your Notes app. People think storytelling is about being a great "talker," but it’s also about being a great **observer**.  3. **Frame Your Career as a Journey ⛰️** True story: I once recited my résumé in chronological order during an interview. 🤦 What I **should** have done was connect the dots. In an interview, the company wants to feel like the destination—like everything you’ve done has been leading to _them. _ This difference looks something like this:  ✖️”I started my career in 2020 in marketing. In 2022, I transitioned to sales. Now, I’m curious about data analytics.”  ✔️”Marketing taught me how people think. Sales taught me how they buy. Now I want to understand the data behind both, which is what drew me to this role."  Remember, being a good storyteller isn’t a “trait” you’re either born with or not. It’s a skill! Three different cover letters in a row all said some version of: “It’s not about the tasks. It’s about the impact.”  That’s when it hit me: ChatGPT wrote these cover letters. 🤖 The "It's not X, it's Y" sentence structure is _everywhere_ now, from emails to LinkedIn posts to (apparently) job applications. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it!  But this sentence structure is just one tell. There are three other ChatGPT giveaways you should know about, because if I can spot them? So can your boss. 👀 1. **Framing phrases ** Phrases like “This shows that…” or “This highlights the importance of…” are the ultimate filler! ChatGPT loves to over-explain it instead of letting the facts speak for themselves.  2. **Wonky formatting ** Extra spaces between sentences. Commas instead of colons. Words bolded for no clear reason. These little formatting quirks signal that the text was probably copied and pasted directly from ChatGPT.  3. **“Not ____. Not ____. Just _____.” ** Another phrase structure I’m seeing everywhere lately. (e.g., “Not perfect. Not polished. What if nobody talks to me? What if I’m next to the snack table by myself the entire time?”_  But mid-spiral, I had a lightbulb moment. I realized my anxiety wasn’t coming from fear, but from a place of **control**—wanting a specific “outcome” from the event. I wanted the night to be "worth it.” To have fun and meet cool people. But** those expectations **were causing me to stress out over something that hadn’t even happened yet!  So I made a swap: **expectations** for **experience**. 🌐 **Here's what I mean: **When you stop “expecting” and stay open to “experiencing” whatever happens—the good, the bad, and in between—all that internal pressure vanishes. When the goal is simply to see what happens, you literally cannot lose.  So I tested this at the networking event and went in with **no** expectations.  Did I meet cool people? Yes! But were there also moments where I was standing alone? Of course. (The snack table and I became well-acquainted.) But because I wasn't grading the night against a specific "outcome,” I felt relaxed and present.  The next time you find yourself spiraling about something, check in: Are you asking a million “what if” questions? That one video launched Miss Excel and changed the trajectory of my life forever.  Five years later, Miss Excel has blossomed into a community of more than 2 million+ people, powered by a team of fabulous humans. It’s even made it possible for me to retire my mom (a true “pinch me” moment 🥹).  It’s been a whirlwind, and I’ve learned **so** much along the way. The lighting wasn’t great, and the audio was super grainy. But it got me started, and I was able to learn from it. You can’t make something better until it exists!  3. **Don’t manage your time. Manage your energy. ** Instead of a random to-do list, I group my tasks by the energy they require. I have **Creative Days** for things like brainstorming webinar ideas andcreating content, and **Admin Days** for logistics—calls, contracts, all that good stuff!  This avoids the “brain drain” of task switching. Turns out jumping from dancing to _Ice Ice Baby _for TikTok to negotiating a contract isn’t exactly a smooth mental shift. 😅 Grouping tasks by energy is just one out of the **hundreds** of ways I’ve learned to get at least **30% more** out of my day. You glance up from your presentation, and you’re met with glazed eyes, fake note taking, and someone on mute who is 100% eating chips. 🙃 Chances are, your meeting started something like this:  _“Hey, everybody. I’m going to, um, share my screen. This is a spreadsheet of our campaign. Column B is views, Column C is sales. Some campaigns did well, um, some didn't. Let’s scroll down…” _ **What went wrong? **This is a classic case of presenting information instead of leading a conversation:  * _Presenting_ is walking people through data.  * _Leading a conversation_ is giving people a reason to **care** about that data and inviting them to engage with it.  If you've ever felt like your meetings fall flat (even though you're prepared!), this might be your culprit. The good news? Career coach [Kendall Berg](https://www.instagram.com/p/DSX3cIxD8oG/) has a simple three-part framework that fixes this: **Context, Problem, Audience.** Here’s an example of it in action:  * **Context**: “Thanks for hopping on! I’d love to give some context before we get started. We ran six campaigns in Q1. While some performed well, they were anomalies. Today, we’re figuring out what worked so we can do more of it going forward.”  * **Problem**: “The problem we want to solve is that we’re not getting the same retention from each campaign.”   * **Audience**: “We need to fix this for our core customers: working parents 18–35 who are juggling a million things.” Anyone can pull up a spreadsheet and point at numbers. Without the vision, the money is just a number in your bank account.  * **A VP title: **Would you lead a bigger team? Launch a new project? Create a new department? If you’re unsure, you might do the same work (with a fancier title).  * **Free time: **What would you fill it with? A hobby? Time with family? Learning a new skill?
