And I've done a lot of internal work over these past six years to make sure that dream didn't become a distraction from the more important goal: writing a book that actually changes how people think, feel, and act. This goal had to remain the north star. And yet. One of the most powerful exercises from the 30-Day Belief Transformation JournalHi , Today I want to share one of the most powerful exercises from the **30-Day Belief Transformation Journal**. It's called the **Future Self Letter.**  There's a psychological technique known as "illeism": referring to yourself in third person. Research shows that when you use your name instead of “I,” you create cognitive distance that helps you stay calmer under pressure, make better decisions, and see situations more objectively. People who use this perspective persist longer when things get hard. In **Beyond Belief** https://www.nirandfar.com/beyond-belief/, I explain the neuroscience: Your brain processes third-person perspective differently. It reduces emotional reactivity and increases clarity. **But here's what makes it even more powerful:**When you write about your future self in the third person, you’re no longer trapped inside today’s doubts. You begin to see the path forward the way you would see it for someone you care about, with patience, realism, and belief. **✍️The Future Self Exercise** Imagine it's December 31, 2026. You achieved the goal you set at the start of the year. Now write a letter about yourself in third person. Structure it this way: * **(1) Opening:** Describe the goal you achieved. **(2) Middle:**Name the obstacles you expected to face and how you overcame them. **(3) The Turning Point:** Identify the moment where you had a breakthrough. What did you change to make your goal more achievable? Was it a belief? A behavior?  **(4) Closing:**Reflect on what you learned about yourself in the process. 📤 **What to do with your letter** * Write it this week. * Reply to this email with your letter. Gather evidence, set intentions, and track belief shifts.Hi , Most people read books about beliefs, underline a few passages, and then...nothing changes. This happens not because they lack discipline but because old beliefs are reinforced daily—under stress, under pressure, and even in familiar environments. When we’re tired or distracted, we revert to the interpretations we’ve practiced the longest. Belief change requires repetition, evidence, and even a bit of structure. That’s why I created the **Beyond Belief 30-Day Belief Transformation Journal**.   I didn’t want **Beyond Belief** to be something you nod along with and forget. I wanted it to become practice. The journal alternates between two types of work: **🌞 Daily 5-Minute Practice** These are quick morning and evening check-ins designed to gather evidence, set intentions, and track belief shifts. 📚 "I wish I read this book 10 years ago" - Steven Bartlett

When your perception shifts, behavior follows.Hi , A few years ago, I sent my mother flowers for her birthday. I picked a florist carefully and made sure they would arrive on time. When I called to wish her happy birthday, she thanked me but then added, “You may want to call the shop. The flowers they sent are already half-dying. Or maybe don’t order from them.” I felt a familiar sting of rejection. How typical of my mother: never satisfied and always critical. My wife Julie overheard the same call, though she didn’t seem to be bothered by my mom’s statements. How did two people hear the same words but leave with completely different perceptions?   **🫤 My Mother is Too Hard to Please** Julie's suggestion was simple: Do “The Work,” the practice developed by author Byron Katie. I reluctantly took out paper and pen and identified the belief driving my reaction: “My mother is too critical and hard to please.” Yes, that’s right. After all, I went through all the effort to ship her the flowers just in time for her birthday. End of story. **🛞 Enter the Turnaround** One of the steps in “The Work” is called the “turnaround," which involves purposefully experimenting with alternative ways to view a challenging situation. Here's how it works: Start with the (usually negative) belief you hold about a person. (In my case: "My mother is too critical and hard to please.") Now, flip that belief in three ways and find evidence for it.  ** 1. Turnaround to the Opposite:** "My mother is NOT too critical and hard to please." Supporting evidence: She thanked me first for the flowers. She wasn’t personally criticizing me. She gave practical info and a reasonable suggestion to contact the florist.  ** 2. Turnaround to the Other:** "I am too critical and hard to please toward my mother." Supporting evidence: I realized I wanted a specific kind of effusive gratitude. When she didn't respond exactly as I wanted, I judged her and dismissed her actual thanks.  **3. Turnaround to the Self:** "I am too critical of myself and hard to please." Supporting evidence: I had taken her comment as evidence of MY failure: I should have known which florist to use. My self-criticism turned a simple comment into evidence of inadequacy. The point was not to land on one “correct” interpretation. The point was to develop a broader range of possible ways to view the same interaction, which created more freedom in how I responded next time. These days, whenever I feel that familiar flicker of irritation, I pause and cycle through the Turnaround. (I’m happy to report that these instances are few and far between.) Did my mother change? I’m not sure. Maybe a little. What I’m certain about is that my **beliefs**about her changed, and that alone improved the dynamic between us.  That experience became one of the central ideas in **Beyond Belief** https://www.nirandfar.com/beyond-belief/: When you change what you believe, you change what you’re capable of seeing. The real question isn't "Is this belief true?" but "Does this belief serve me?"Hi , For much of my life, I was the kid who never took off his shirt at the community pool. While other teenagers splashed in the Central Florida heat, I'd sit on the edge wearing an oversized t-shirt to hide my belly rolls. Over the next thirty years, my bookshelf became a graveyard of diet books. I meticulously logged fat grams in 1994. Three years later, I filled my fridge with tofu and potatoes. Then those same foods became contraband as I embraced keto. Eventually, intermittent fasting became my new gospel. Each plan felt like the answer. And in a way, each one was. I'd lose weight, feel better, preach my latest revelation at parties. But every time, something awful would happen. I'd read an article explaining why my current diet was wrong. As my confidence faltered, so did my results. New failure-justifying beliefs crept in: "It's hard for bigger people to exercise." "It doesn't matter what I eat." The pounds crept back. Every diet worked... until it didn't. **My Glass Walls** It wasn't about finding the perfect plan. It was about belief. When I truly believed in a diet—when I was convinced it would work—I followed through with devotion. But the moment doubt crept in, commitment collapsed. What I didn't see then: A belief can be helpful without being universal or even strictly true. The real breakthrough came when I stopped chasing the "perfect" plan and started believing that consistent daily choices mattered more than giant overhauls. Think of the last time you quit something that mattered. Maybe it was the novel gathering dust, the business idea you talked yourself out of, or the difficult conversation you've been avoiding. What story did you tell yourself? "I'm not creative enough." "It's too late." "People like me don't succeed at this." We repeat these phrases until they feel true. But they're not facts. These invisible barriers are what keep us from persevering longer than we thought possible. **The Missing Side of Motivation** Most people picture motivation as a straight line: want the benefit, do the behavior. But this model is incomplete. If knowing what to do were enough, we'd all follow through on everything good for us. You can have a perfect plan, but if you don't believe your effort will make a difference, you won't persist. Motivation is a triangle. One side is behavior (actions you take). Another is benefit (outcomes you want). But at the base, holding everything together, is **belief**—your conviction that actions will lead to results. All three are essential, but belief is the foundation. Without it, motivation collapses. **Between Fact and Faith** Some things are certain. Water freezes at 32°F. These are facts. At the other extreme is faith: conviction without evidence. But most of life lives in between. Will this business succeed? Is this the right person to marry? We need working models of reality to make decisions without perfect information. That's where belief lives. Belief: A firmly held opinion, open to revision based on new evidence. Beliefs aren't thoughts or feelings. **They're tools**—working models we use when truth isn't fully knowable. We can choose beliefs based on usefulness, not just provability. The real question isn't "Is this belief true?" but "Does this belief serve me?" **How Belief Actually Works** When I finally lost the weight and kept it off, it wasn't the perfect diet. It was the right beliefs—about myself and what was possible. This applies beyond weight loss. The programmer who masters a new language, the musician who performs on stage, the executive who leads through crisis—they succeed because they developed beliefs that sustained effort through setbacks. So is the answer "just believe"? No. "Just believe" is incomplete. Beliefs aren't wishes you turn on like a switch. They're mental models built through experience, evidence, and deliberate construction. You can't develop powerful beliefs without strategic effort—just like physical strength. Belief operates through **three powers:** **1. Attention: Seeing What You Believe** Believing is seeing. Beliefs filter what we notice. When I believed I was destined to be overweight, I noticed every failure and overlooked every success. When my beliefs shifted, I suddenly saw people who succeeded, strategies that worked, moments of progress. The world hadn't changed. My attention had. **2. Anticipation: Feeling What You Believe** Beliefs are emotional forecasts. When I believed a diet would fail, stress increased, cravings intensified, willpower felt harder. When I believed in a plan, I felt energized. What we expect shapes our biochemistry and our capacity to persist. **3. Agency: Doing What You Believe** This turns belief into action. When I believed my efforts didn't matter, I couldn't maintain consistency. When I believed my daily choices accumulated into change, I kept going—even through plateaus and mistakes. Together, these three powers create a feedback loop. What you believe shapes what you see. What you see shapes what you expect. What you expect shapes what you do. And what you do provides evidence that reinforces or challenges your belief. **This is how beliefs become self-fulfilling prophecies.** The question isn't whether your beliefs will shape reality—they will. In fact, it can make things worse. I know that's hard to hear, especially when Instagram is filled with manifestation coaches and vision boards. But the research is crystal clear. **📚The Problem With Imagining Success** Dr. Gabriele Oettingen at NYU spent decades studying goal-setting. Her findings: The more positively people fantasize about success, the less well they actually do. In one study, she hooked people up to blood pressure monitors and asked them to visualize achieving their biggest dreams: landing the job, losing weight, finding romance. Their blood pressure dropped immediately. Why? The fantasy gave them a temporary high...but it drained the energy needed for actual effort. Their brains acted as if they'd already succeeded. From academic tests to weight loss to career advancement, positive fantasies consistently led to worse outcomes. **🧲Here's Why Positive Thinking Backfires** When you vividly imagine achieving a goal, your brain registers some of the emotional reward before any work has been done. You feel encouraged, even satisfied, as if progress is already underway. But the reality of pursuing that goal is almost always harder than the fantasy suggests. When friction appears, effort declines, persistence weakens, and the gap between imagination and reality feels discouraging. To escape those feelings, it’s easy to return to the fantasy rather than engage the work itself. Over time, this creates a loop in which imagining success subtly replaces pursuing it. In **Beyond Belief,** I call this "The Circle of False Promise." **🧩The Solution: Mental Contrasting ** Dr. Oettingen discovered the solution: mental contrasting. Instead of visualizing success in isolation, you deliberately pair your desired outcome with the real obstacles in your way. Then you construct an “if-then” strategy that specifies what you’ll do when that obstacle appears.  For example: * Desired outcome: Run a 5K by June * Visualization: Crossing the finish line, feeling strong * Obstacle: Wanting to chill/rest instead of train for the run * If-then plan: If I’m tempted to sleep in, then I'll put my shoes by my bed and commit to just putting them on. Studies show people who practice mental contrasting stick with goals longer, achieve more, and feel less discouraged when challenges appear. Why? What Are Your Beliefs Costing You? Meet Sarah and Jennifer, colleagues at a fast-growing tech company. Both are crushing their targets and are respected by their teams and leaders.  When a VP position opens at their company, their managers expect both to apply. 💰 The invisible barrier costing you $20K/year

Across industries and countries, the same five beliefs kept surfacing: Hi , Last month, I asked 887 high performers the following question: “What’s one belief that often stops you from doing the thing you want to do?” The responses were both unsurprising and revealing. Across industries and countries, the same five beliefs kept surfacing:  **#1: “I probably won’t succeed.” (Fear of Failure) ** This is the classic limiting belief that results in a “fear of failure.” In my upcoming book Beyond Belief https://www.nirandfar.com/beyond-belief/, I share how this belief is one of the core pillars of motivation. When you don't believe your effort will lead to results, you won't persist. You might know exactly what to do and desperately want the outcome, but without belief that your actions matter, you'll quit before reaching your potential. **#2: “I’m not good enough.” (Lack of self-trust)** Lack of self-trust is a core wound that underlies limiting beliefs like: “I’m not capable,”  “I’m not ready,” or  “I don’t have what it takes.” **#3: “It has to be perfect, or it’s not worth sharing.” (Perfectionism) ** Perfectionism often masquerades as high standards, which can be both a blessing and a curse for high performers. It keeps brilliant work locked in drafts, businesses stuck in planning mode, and careers stalled at “almost ready.”  **#4: “I won’t follow through…so why start?” (Expected procrastination) ** Research in Beyond Belief https://www.nirandfar.com/beyond-belief/ shows that procrastination isn't a discipline problem; it's a belief problem. When you don't believe your effort will matter, your brain shuts down before you finish and enters you into a belief loop:  When you don’t believe your effort will pay off, your brain protects you by delaying the discomfort. **#5: “I can’t have more without sacrificing something.” (Scarcity)** This one often shows up as trade-offs that feel non-negotiable: time, stability, family, safety. Example from the data: “I believe I can’t change my job without sacrificing family time, money, or stability.” ~~~ These beliefs rarely exist in isolation. By noticing the pattern, I could start reimagining the moment, reframing the task, or simply allowing the feeling to pass without acting on it.
