​ ​ ******************************************************* What Nobody Tells You About Building Through Hard Times ******************************************************* ​ Last week I texted my friend, "Have you seen those breast feeding pods in the airport?" ​ "Yeah..." she replied, confused about where I was going with this. ​ "It's been one of those weeks where I fantasize about buying one, putting it in my backyard, and shutting myself inside." ​ Last week, something bad was happening to nearly everyone I cared about. As a highly sensitive person, I took it hard. ​ And it's no secret that since my parents died, I've struggled with depression. Although I'm feeling so much better these days, it doesn't take much to push me over the edge. ​ After their deaths, it feels like someone went in, tangled my brain's pathways worse than a pair of wired headphones, and left me to figure out how to untangle them... in the dark... with my hands tied behind my back. ​ One Sarah McLachlan animal commercial and I go down... hard. ​ Yet regardless of what's happening around me, in the world, or how tough of a grief-day I'm having, my business doesn't stop business'ing. ​ ​People want to buy the Ultimate Bundle®️. ​ ​ ****************************** I Didn't Have Time to Girlboss ****************************** ​ When I walked out of the law firm for the last time on Friday, August 19, 2016, I thought I was on my way to build a successful online health coaching business. ​ In reality, I had no idea what I was doing. ​ I did the same things you did -- ​ 🌰 I stuffed my inbox with more webinars than a squirrel storing nuts for the winter. ​ 🧘‍♂️ I started following all of the gurus who seemed to have the secrets to quick success. ​ And since it was 2016, I became a full-fledged girl boss building her femmepire. L: My IG story 9/5/2018; R: speaker tag from FearlessCon, Philadelphia, PA, October 2017 ​ Back then, there was A WAY to do things if you wanted to be successful online. ​ At least that's what 'they' said. ​ But right after I started my business, I had brain surgery and a rough 1-year recovery. ​ The moment I felt better, my dad got leukemia. ​ 🥂 I went from girlbossing it up and toasting my femmepire mug to the idea that women could build independent wealth online to... ​ 💊 Negotiating with big pharma companies to get my dad hundreds of thousands of dollars of experimental drugs per month for free just to keep him alive. I’d read through my TBR pile. I stared at my mom’s knitting pile and dreamt of being someone who could figure it out. ​ So when I was watching the Emmy’s and saw a reality show called The Traitors won an Emmy, it caught my attention. ​ Growing up, I was obsessed with The Real World and Road Rules — not exactly “Emmy award winning television.” ​ Desperate one day when it was already dark at 4:45pm, I flipped Traitors on. ​ I was hooked. Who’s a traitor and who’s a faithful? How many times will Alan Cumming say murrrr-derrrr in that delicious Scottish accent? ​ I won’t spoil any seasons for you (have you watched?! Tell me!!) but what I can spoil for you is this: ​ The people who win it aren’t the loudest. ​ They’re not the ones causing the most drama or throwing themselves in front of the camera. ​ They’re the ones slowly, quietly working in the background to build relationships and a long-term plan. ​ You know what that reminds me a whole lot of? ​ Building a successful online business. ​ Over the past 10 years, I’ve never been the loudest, trendiest, or most dramatic (at least online!) person in the biz. ​ I’ve slowly chipped away behind the scenes, building my business to a multi 7-figure one in 2019 and kept it that way every single year since. ​ The cool club never invited me to join. No one ever knew how much I was making behind the scenes. It’s not 10k followers. It’s not selling 10k books. ​ That’s like assuming that outfit that looks amazing on her will look the same on you. Maybe it will, maybe it won’t. ​ Maybe it’s not the outfit that you like. Maybe it’s how confident she looks in it. ​ I think it’s why so many people write to me telling me they’re envious of my business. ​ It’s not because I make the most money, sell the most books, or have the biggest audience. ​ I hope it’s because I show that my successful business isn’t my life… and then actually live it. ​ My business is just a sliver of it. ​ I live a little, quiet life full of spontaneous walks to our beach, savoring that first sip of coffee each morning without thinking about my to-do list, and my refrigerator full of art from my nephews and the neighborhood kids. ​ So maybe I could win Traitors? ​ ​ ************************************************ I'm Getting Really Good at Being Bad (at things) ************************************************ ​ I'm not very good at being bad at things. ​ I don't mean I'm good at everything. I mean, when I'm bad at something, I act like an Upper East Side child who got last year's Labubu for Christmas. ​ I'm working on it. ​ This childish part of myself came to a head last year when I hiked the challenging, yet stunning, mountains of Chile and Argentina in Patagonia. ​ Every hike went nearly the same way: ​ The hikes started out flat and beautiful, meandering through lush valleys and past ice blue glaciers. But as soon as we'd reach our first challenging ascent, I snapped. ​ My mind would instantly go dark. ​ I can't do this. This is too hard. Why did we come here? This isn't fun. This isn't a vacation! I hate this. I hate hiking. ​ I'd get to the top to see this: guanacos were my favorite part And I'd instantly chill. I can't believe I made it, I'd think. Why did I have to make the journey here so miserable for myself? ​ Granted, my grief was pretty fresh. I hadn't even lost my mom 2 years before. ​ Actually, everything on that trip was really fresh: I'd never ice climbed a glacier, kayaked 28-miles down a glacier river, or used my bare hands to hoist myself up and over rocks the length of my entire body caked in mud. ​ And I'd definitely never gone to the bathroom in the woods. (I'm from Philly. We eat hoagies and throw batteries at Santa 😂) ​ I'm actually really good at trying new things. ​ I'm just not good at being bad at them. ​ Or, at least I wasn't. ​ Something about that Patagonia trip made me come to. I didn't like my mindset, and it didn't feel like me, either. ​ I went to China by myself when I was 16. I've stood out in below-zero temps at Lambeau to watch the Packers beat the Bears. I've competed in HYROX, even though I had brain surgery! ​ ​ I'm adventurous. I posted weekly anyway. ​ The thing I'm proudest of, after having recently reached over 1,000 subscribers there, isn't that metric itself -- ​ It's the fact that I kept going even when things felt clunky and uncomfortable. I didn't know how Substack worked, no one engaged with anything I wrote... it would have been easy to go back to platforms I'm used to. Ones I know I can "perform" on. ​ What I'm writing there might not be good. It might not even be useful to other people (gasp!). ​ I even have a selfish motivation to be there. I want to practice my writing so I get better at it. ​ ​ ************************ On Working on Your Craft ************************ ​ My office closet is like a little shrine to all of my 'failed' business attempts. ​ If you read my book ( https://eedda0a7.click.convertkit-mail4.com/p9u25gkzz5i9h26lnx9hqhp0l6e46trhmv4g/08hwhgu2vp5478hp/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2FtdmFuZGVyd2llbGVuLmNvbS9ib29rLw== ), you know I started a food blog called Barrister's Beet when I was still working as a corporate lawyer. ​ This wasn't just some side hobby. I really wanted to be a famous food blogger. ​ So I did what I thought you were supposed to do when you wanted a really big thing. ​ I bought everything a "famous food blogger" needed. ​ A fancy camera I didn't know how to operate. A 20-piece, overly complicated lighting system I couldn't set up myself. Editing software to brighten and adjust the photos I didn't know how to use. ​ Not knowing how to use these things was the least of my problems... ​ I didn't even want to learn. ​ What I really wanted was pretty photos that made my website and food look fancy... ​ I just didn't want to learn how to take them. ​ 🔓 I'd just unlocked my first business lesson: you can tell a lot about what you really want by how willing you are to struggle to get it. ​ After ditching my food blogger dreams and shutting down the health coaching business I created right after, I was shocked to see how differently I approached my legal templates business. ​ I don't understand this whole SEO thing... no prob, I'll teach myself! ​ What kind of content do I need to create to get people to buy my products? I'll just play and figure it out! ​ Not one of the 50 people on my email list replied to my newsletter? Interesting! I'll learn how to write stronger calls to action to get them to click/reply. ​ This time, I was willing to be bad in order to get good. ​ Obstacles weren't challenges; they were opportunities. I genuinely celebrated the fact that I had 50, then 100, then 1,000 people to email each week -- I couldn't imagine speaking to a room full of THAT many people! ​ These days, I hear from so many people who want the outcome -- ​ The big email list. The huge following on Instagram. A packed book tour... ​ But what they don't realize is that in order to get where they want to land, they're going to have to go through a lot of turbulence first. ​ In order to build an audience, you have to get really good at creating content. ​ To build a big email list, you've got to work really hard, for a long time, to learn how to attract people who need you and then learn how to retain them. ​ To sell thousands of copies of your book, you have to work on your writing so you actually have an audience to sell to. ​ In other words, you've got to work on getting good in order to get the good result you want. ​ Here's what you should focus on first if you want to build an audience full of people who buy, share, reply, and listen. I'm inside the barrel. And I'm the one squeezing it. ​ There's this me that's so ambitious and full of creative energy. The one that dreams in email sequences and giddily texts her friends with "fun ideas for their funnels." (LOL) ​ And there's the me who so desperately needed the gap year she set out to have in the first place. ​ The me that feels exhausted, burnt out, and content-cynical after the loss of both of my parents and the complicated, painful grief I'm processing behind the scenes. ​ I'm not looking for advice. (Please don't give it, I'm already overwhelmed.) ​ I also don't have advice to give. (Something I'm learning to be OK with on my quest to not always be helpful. I am valuable, even if I'm not helpful.) ​ I know what to do in times like these: ​ * sit with how I'm feeling * chop everything that's not actually necessary, but feels it in my head * put my phone away & get off social * focus on 1 thing at a time that actually moves the business (this email, 1 podcast episode, etc.) ​ I wanted to share this in case you also struggle with slowing down. Not that anyone thought this, but I didn't want you to think it was necessarily going smoothly or easily for me over here. ​ Like me, you might be someone who's so used to running at sprint speed on autopilot that slowing down is actually the more difficult speed to maintain. ​ It's also in my Philly nature to be honest with you 100% of the time. I don't know it any other way. ​ And if you ever look at someone like me and think, "well she has energy all the time!" or "She just does all these things in her business and never gets stressed!" ​ Or you think, "she has a team, that's why everything is so easy and effortless" or "she has [insert thing you think I have that you don't have yet]" -- ​ It's important to remember that you own the business. You produce the content. Life's too short!) ​ But it's one of the places in the world where I feel the most connected to my dad, Norm. (My dad and BFF, Norm, passed away in May 2022 from AML leukemia, in case you're new here.) ​ Growing up, the only vacation I ever went on with my dad was to Disney World. ​ We went multiple times per year, actually! (he definitely would NOT go multiple times per year now. Have you seen these Disney prices?! I don't know how people afford it!!) ​ Before my dad got leukemia in 2018, we had been talking about taking a trip down memory lane to visit the mouse house. ​ Then he got sick. ​ I thought once his treatment stabilized, we'd go. ​ But with chemo treatments every 3 weeks, and daily labs and blood transfusions in between... there was no chance. ​ As his leukemia wore on, he became more and more neutropenic -- making it extremely risky for him to even eat bagged salad, let alone someone's leftover snot on the Monorail. ​ Then came COVID... and the rest is history. ​ He died before we ever got to go. ​ I've this dream on my heart to go to Disney to reconnect with him ever since he died. I miss him so badly that it hurts somewhere deep within my belly -- a place that feels painfully close, yet lightyears away. ​ Yet instead of saying 'yes' to this dream I've had... ​ I judged myself for it. I talked myself out of it. I kept pushing it off. ​ "I'm not a child... I don't need to go to Disney World... especially if I go alone. Isn't that just... weird?" ​ But in honor of 2026 being my 'entrepreneur gap year' and letting myself play more: ​ I woke up one day in early January, struck by a lightning bolt of decision. ​ By the end of the day, my flights were booked, park hopper passes secured, and I felt my belly flutter the way it would when the elevator in Hollywood Tower drops. ​ And now I'm here. ​ Every single thing reminds me of him. The wafts of waffle cone as I stroll down Main Street. The trash cans, that are somehow never dirty. The music during the light show. ​ Everything is completely different. ​ Everything here at Disney, but also every single thing in my life. ​ Yet my heart feels this love like it's the most familiar thing I've ever known. ​ I think this is going to be a really hard week. ​ It's also going to be magical. ​ But what the heck does any of this have to do with you building an online business? ​ We spend a lot of time judging ourselves for our dreams. ​ Maybe yours is to start a business. ​ Or to switch up your niche and talk about something else. ​ To become " -- the go-to person for ___." I get it. It’s easy to punch into ChatGPT, Claude or any AI something like: I’m drafting a contract for a client. Can you create a clause that basically says x, y and z. Then you read what Chat spits out, thinking it sounds lawyer-level-firm, then confidently paste it into Dubsado. You instantly feel 10x more professional, right? Here’s why relying on AI-generated contracts is mega risky — ⚠️ AI can generate words that sound good. But in law, how something is written, where it’s written, and what it’s paired with matters just as much as what it says. So ChatGPT can generate language that “fake protects” you if a client doesn’t pay, but it’s just that — fake protection.🤷🏻‍♀️ Because though it sounds right, it might… * use outdated or incorrect legal language * fail to meet state-specific contract requirements * neglect to properly define key terms like “scope” or “payment default” * includes clauses courts routinely strike down * not cover you or the kind of work you’re doing online The result? You think you’re protected — until a judge says the clause is vague, overreaching, or unenforceable. ⚠️ AI misses clauses you don’t know how to ask for When it comes to contracts you don’t know what you don’t know, right? And why would you? You didn’t go to law school (I don’t blame ya and I’m sorta jealous 😅). ChatGPT can only respond to what you prompt. It won’t proactively say: * “Hey, you forgot an indemnification clause here” * “This needs a limitation of liability and a damages cap” * “This conflicts with your refund policy on your checkout page” * “This clause creates ambiguity with your Terms of Use” AI responds in isolation. Attorneys think in systems. ⚠️ Online business is weirdly specific. You’re dealing with things like digital delivery, instant access, IP licensing, chargebacks, monthly payments, platform terms (Stripe, PayPal, Kajabi, etc.) and multi-state and international buyers. Generic contract language often… ❌ assumes physical goods or in-person purchases ❌ assumes local transactions ❌ uses default jurisdiction language that backfires online So even if ChatGPT gives you a “contract,” it’s likely not specific to your online business whatsoever. ⚠️ AI contracts = you’re likely contradicting yourself up the whazoo You might generate a contract from ChatGPT, get a refund policy from a blog and make up terms of use from another prompt entirely. That’s not good. Because now you might have: * one document promising refunds * another saying all sales are final * one clause requiring arbitration * another allowing lawsuits If anything across your legal documents conflict, the court sides with the customer. There’s more, but hopefully you get the point. 😅 So yeah… ChatGPT can help you write words, but not necessarily ones that stand up in court. I’d rather you avoid all that. ​ ​ ******************* We've Lost the Plot ******************* ​ I swear I left an imprint on the couch. ​ I spent most of the past two weeks squarely planted on it -- mostly watching Knife Edge, a new Apple+ series that follows restaurants chasing Michelin stars. ​ You can learn a lot from that show. Not even about food. But what happens when you get so focused on outside awards and vanity metrics that you lose the plot. ​ Some of the restaurants on the show won the star (or three!) they so desperately wanted, but others didn't. ​ The restaurants that didn't win tended to have something in common: ​ ⭐ They were more focused on getting the star than they were on their customers or the food they served them. They let the pressure of something arbitrary burn their love for cooking -- and it showed. ​ They forgot why they started their restaurants. (Fun fact: the ones who only opened restaurants to win a star? They never got one.) ​ As they sautéed shallots and basted fish with more butter than a Red Lobster cheddar biscuit, they forgot about the people actually eating their food. ​ Honestly? It reminded me of how easy it is to do the same thing in business. ​ You can get caught up in follower counts, revenue numbers, and how many clients you have... ​ And forget that you won't have any of that -- at least for long -- if you don't prioritize your customers and achieve the trifecta: create a product that's needed, wanted, and actually works. ​ For me, AI tools pull me away from all of this ^. ​ AI can be helpful. ​ But using it makes me second-guess myself. ​ Sure, I can train AI to "know my customer."
