Can I share something personal? I’ve felt so lonely in the most crowded places.    And I thought this was weird so I felt BOTH lonely and sad and hopeless.    I had the mistaken belief that loneliness happens when you are alone. Nope. Loneliness is a pesky beast and isn’t that simple.   First, are some astounding facts: * Roughly 1 in 4 adults worldwide report feeling lonely. * An estimated 333 million people report chronic loneliness. * Loneliness has been declared a global public health epidemic. So this is not a small problem – and YOU are not alone if you feel lonely!   This has become my personal and professional mission.   We had a Science of People team retreat in March and discussed our company mission: Combatting loneliness is our new driving force.   Second, loneliness is about connection.   I was the most lonely in college, surrounded by people, with a packed social calendar and lots of ‘friends.’ This had nothing to do with the amount of people around me and everything to do with the fact that I felt I didn’t belong.   More recently, I’ve struggled to find other working Moms who are facing the same crushing challenges of trying to manage it all.   This had nothing to do with the fact that I do have wonderful friends, and everything to do with the fact that I feel I can’t share the burden, frustrations and heartache with people who will deeply understand.   I’m working on this WITH you. A key lesson in relationships   Hi Maude,   I used to be the one who organized everything. The group chats. The dinner parties. The person who remembered everyone’s birthdays and showed up with the right bottle of snack and stayed until the end. I had so much energy for people.   And then, gradually, I didn’t.   I started declining more invitations. My call list is shorter. More and more group chats have gone dormant. I stopped reaching out as much.    It’s been a quiet shift. Have you felt it too?   According to the research BOTH men and women get less extroverted overtime. If this is happening to you or you’re watching this happen to someone you love, your first instinct is probably to worry. Or to apologize for it — or wonder if something’s wrong with you.   But this can be an important shift and an opportunity.   We hear a lot about aging bodies…but we don’t often hear about how our personality ages.   Have you noticed this about yourself or anyone in your life? * “My social circle has shrunk!” * “I can’t stand small talk anymore. I’m just too tired.” * “I used to be so social, but now I’m a homebody.” Across decades of personality research using the Big Five model — the most rigorously validated framework in psychology (I talk about this in Captivate) ( https://www.amazon.com/Captivate-Science-Succeeding-People/dp/0399564497/?adt_ei=b%40email.gomodulr.com&utm_campaign=3%2F26+Women+get+less+extroverted+over+time&utm_content=Women+get+less+extroverted+over+time&utm_medium=email_action&utm_source=customer.io ) — one of the most consistent findings is that extroversion tends to decline as people age.   This is true for both men and women, but the pattern plays out differently across genders, and for very interesting reasons.   What’s actually declining isn’t our capacity for connection.   It’s two specific components of extroversion: * Sensation-seeking — the appetite for novelty, stimulation, and high-energy social environments * Social dominance — the drive to be at the center of the room, to lead, to hold social attention What tends to stay stable, or even increase, is warmth, empathy, and the depth of close relationships. We don’t stop being interested in people. We stop being interested in all people, all the time.   Stanford psychologist Laura Carstensen’s landmark Socioemotional Selectivity Theory explains this elegantly:   "As people age and their sense of time becomes more finite, they naturally begin to optimize social energy for meaning and quality rather than breadth and novelty."   Our social circles shrink — but deliberately, not accidentally. Our relationships that remain tend to be deeper, more honest, and more reciprocal.   In other words: we’re not losing our social self. We’re editing it.   This is the most important nuance in this entire conversation, and it’s the one most people miss.   There is a world of difference between someone who is pulling back because they are choosing depth over breadth — and a person who is withdrawing because they are lonely, depressed, grieving, or losing themselves.   From the outside, they can look identical. Both cancel plans. Both are harder to reach. Both seem to need less company.   The difference is this: * Intentional selectivity feels like clarity. You know what you want. The aloneness feels restoring, not punishing. When you do connect, your fully present and genuinely glad to be there. * Involuntary withdrawal feels like fog. You want connection but can’t seem to reach for it. The aloneness feels heavy. You don’t look forward to the things you used to love. Even the good moments feel flat. * I want to help you with both. I want you to have more intentional selectivity, more clarity and more connection in the relationships you choose to have time for. * I want to help you prevent and fight involuntary withdrawal by giving you new tools to connect. Knowing what you might ask or share reduces social pressure. * Identifying Social Strengths (32:46): Everyone has natural strengths—whether it’s one-on-one connection or commanding a room. Lean into yours. * Warmth and Competence (42:19): Charisma comes from balancing warmth (likability) with competence (capability). * Reading Social Cues (46:28): Look for subtle signals—like a lip purse (withholding) or a mouth shrug (doubt)—to understand what’s not being said. * The Small Talk Diet (1:14:43): Skip autopilot questions like “How are you?” and ask about what people are excited about instead. * Dismissing Awkward Moments (1:16:45): Awkward moments happen. The key is to acknowledge them and move on quickly without dwelling. I haven’t been single for 20 years and I still found these interesting   Hi Maude,   I haven’t been single for a very long time (20 years) but I still found this study super intriguing. I also think it made me a better matchmaker (which would have been my profession if this one didn’t work out).   Researcher Jeffrey Hall spent years studying how people express romantic interest, and what he found is fascinating: there are five distinct flirting styles, and each one has its own strengths, blind spots, and signals that can be completely missed by the wrong audience.   I’m doing a 30 Day Romance Challenge inside of People School for the entire month of April.   My goal is to help you level-up your love if you are in a relationship and FIND YOUR PERSON if you are dating. Dr. Hall did not study this, but I have seen this to be true.    #2 The Playful Flirt   This is the person who's always a little bit on, witty, teasing, light.   They flirt the way some people make small talk: effortlessly, and sometimes without even meaning anything serious by it.   This can be a super fun style BUT there needs to be substance behind the witty banter.   I think the kids call this style “Rizz” but I’m guessing (I’m an old millennial, feel like an Xer, act like a Boomer often).   If this is you (dating): When you're genuinely interested in someone, dial up the specificity. Make it clear this moment is different from your usual banter. And ask deep questions too – not just the silly stuff.   If this is you or your partner (longterm): You are actually sitting on one of the most powerful tools in a long-term relationship: humor and play. Research on lasting couples consistently shows that shared laughter is one of the strongest predictors of relationship satisfaction. So be playful - don’t lose this with flirting!   #3 The Sincere Flirt   This is my personal favorite, and honestly, the most underrated style.   Sincere flirts create connection through genuine curiosity and emotional attentiveness. They ask real questions. They remember what you said last time. They make you feel seen.   And Dr. Hall found that THIS style does the best longterm.   If this is you (dating): Don't be afraid to make your interest a little more explicit. "I really enjoy talking with you" goes a long way. Ask some deeper conversation starters. I will be giving a ton in our 30 Day romance challenge.   If this is you or your partner (longterm): Your superpower is making people feel deeply known — and that is something long-term relationships desperately need, because familiarity can quietly replace curiosity over time.   The action step here isn't big: just ask one question this week that you don't already know the answer to. Not "how was your day," something real. What's been on their mind lately? What do they wish they had more time for? Don’t get into conversation autopilot with your partner!   #4 The Traditional Flirt   Traditional flirts follow a script: one person pursues, the other receives.   They tend to be more reserved about expressing interest first, they prefer to signal availability and let the other person make a move.   This style can build beautiful slow-burn connection, but it can also create a lot of waiting, ambiguity, and missed opportunities, especially when two traditional flirts end up interested in each other and both hold back, wondering why the other person isn't making a move.   If this is you (dating): The clearest green light you can give is making yourself consistently, visibly available and warm, and being willing to meet in the middle.   If this is you or your partner (longterm): Don’t get stuck in your roles - if they are working, great. But make sure to check-in on them during monthly date nights.   #5 The Polite Flirt   This person follows all the social rules, stays well within boundaries, and shows interest in very measured, careful ways. They're rarely accused of being "too much." They're thoughtful, considerate, and slow to signal.   But this comes at a cost: Their interest is often completely invisible.   The person they like may genuinely have no idea.   If this is you (dating): One small step outside your comfort zone — holding eye contact a beat longer, or saying "I'd really like to see you again" — can change everything.   Your subtlety reads as disinterest to most people. 🚨   If this is you or your partner (longterm): Polite flirts make extraordinarily considerate partners — they're attuned, respectful, and rarely overbearing. After watching the four US Seasons I figured out the trick to winning.   Here's the thing I can't stop thinking about...   After watching the four US seasons (I’ll watch UK as soon as I have time), I have a theory... and it's backed by behavioral science.   The most likable person always wins.   Not the most strategic. Not the most experienced. Not the most paranoid or perceptive.   The person who makes everyone feel warm and safe and glad they're there.   We like people who are easy to be around. The kind of person you want on your team immediately.    I’m NOT going to give any spoilers because if you haven’t watched it I want you to learn some behavioral science while you do and LEARN from it.   Why likability breaks your lie detector   Here's what the science says: humans detect lies at roughly 54% accuracy. Barely better than a coin flip. But that number drops even further when we like the person we're evaluating.   This is because of something called the halo effect, a well-documented cognitive bias where our positive feelings about someone bleed into all of our judgments about them.   When you like someone, your brain automatically filters their behavior through a generous lens.   A suspicious pause becomes "thoughtful." A deflection becomes "humble." A story that doesn't add up becomes "they must just be nervous."   And underneath that is something even more powerful: cognitive dissonance.   Once you've laughed with someone, confided in them, decided in your gut that they're good... your brain will work overtime to reject evidence that proves otherwise. Because accepting that someone could be a Traitor means accepting that your own instincts failed you. Trustworthiness is whether they act in your interest over time.   These often overlap, but they don't always.   The most charming people in your life are worth a second, clearer look. Not with suspicion, but with honesty.   Ask yourself: does this person's behavior match their warmth? Or am I holding the halo up for them?   Your instincts are a starting point. You know the type.   Every conversation turns into a battle.  Every disagreement becomes a crisis.  Every attempt to de-escalate gets twisted into new ammunition.    You walk away from interactions with them feeling exhausted, confused, and somehow at fault, even when you know, logically, that you did nothing wrong.   These are high conflict people (HCPs). And if you don't know how to spot them, you'll spend years of your life trying to reason your way out of situations that reason can't fix.   The question is, what makes someone High Conflict?   High conflict people aren't just difficult, they're wired differently when it comes to blame.   Where most people can reflect on their role in a problem, HCPs have an almost compulsive need to externalize — to find a target and pin everything on them (that target is often you.)   Common traits include: * All-or-nothing thinking. You're either fully with them or completely against them. There's no middle ground. * Unmanaged emotions. Reactions are disproportionate, a small slight becomes a catastrophic betrayal. * Extreme behavior. They escalate in ways that most people find shocking — public outbursts, legal threats, smear campaigns. * A preoccupation with blame. The conversation always ends up focused on who's at fault, never on solving the problem. Hi Maude,   This is a hard email to write because friendship is supposed to be a safe place.   So when a friendship starts to feel heavy… confusing… draining… or quietly painful, it can mess with your mind.   My Grandma once told me: you don’t have to keep watering a relationship that keeps you thirsty.   But it’s so hard to end a relationship. So I wanted to give you some kind tools to end a relationship that might not be serving you.   And sometimes friendships just go stale. It’s not always dramatic.   Sometimes it’s just… a slow mismatch. You grow apart. They change. You change.   So today I want to talk about something we don’t have a script for: Friendship breakups.   And how, sometimes, choosing distance is actually the most loving thing you can do, for both of you.   First: a truth that will set you free Not every friendship is meant to last forever.   Some friendships are for a season. Some are for a version of you. Some are for survival, when you needed someone, anyone, who understood you.   And then… you grow. They grow. Or one of you doesn’t.   And suddenly, the friendship starts to feel like you’re trying to squeeze into jeans from three years ago.   It’s not evil. It’s just… too small now.   Here are a few signs your friendship might be shifting into an ending (or at least a major reset):   1) You feel worse after you see them   Not tired from socializing…but emotionally bruised. You replay the conversation. You doubt yourself. You feel smaller.   That’s information–pay attention.   2) It’s become one-sided   You’re always initiating. Always supporting. Always explaining.   And you’re starting to realize: you’re not in a friendship—you’re in a role. An unpaid therapist. A dumping ground.   You should not feel you have to play a role.   3) You can’t be fully yourself around them anymore   You’re filtering. Performing. Hiding good news. Downplaying your growth so you don’t trigger their judgment or jealousy.   That’s not connection. That’s self-editing.   4) Dread   If you see their name pop into your phone, what do you feel?    If you see their name on your calendar, what do you do? Are you excited? Or filled with dread?    You don’t want to see them. You feel like you should.   And “should” is not a friendship strategy. It’s a guilt strategy.   5) Your values have quietly diverged   Sometimes it’s not personality. It’s not conflict. It’s values. And values are the roots of friendship.   If the roots don’t match anymore, the relationship can’t keep growing in the same direction.   An ending can be a gift.   Dragging out a friendship you’ve outgrown doesn’t protect anyone. It usually creates more resentment, passive distance, and emotional confusion.   Sometimes, the kindest thing you can do is stop pretending everything is fine when it isn’t.   If you’re considering a friendship breakup… try this first   You don’t have to go nuclear. You can start with a friendship reset.   Here are three options, depending on the situation:   Option 1: The gentle fade (for low-stakes friendships)   This is okay when the friendship isn’t harmful, just no longer aligned.   → Respond slower → Initiate less → Let the distance happen naturally   Once you do this, do you notice that you miss them? Think of them? Do they change or get better?   Great, reengage!   Option 2: The boundary upgrade (for draining friendships)   Try naming the pattern with a simple limit:   → “I can’t do late-night emotional calls anymore, but I love you and I’m here for you in other ways.” → “I’m trying to protect my energy right now, so I’m being more intentional with plans.” You’re not rejecting them. You’re protecting you.   Option 3: The direct closure (for painful or toxic dynamics)   Sometimes you need a clean end.   A script that works: “I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting, and I don’t think this friendship is healthy for me anymore. I’m grateful for what we’ve shared, but I need to step back. I truly wish you well.”   This is the part I want you to remember if you’re feeling guilty: Saying no to the wrong people, will give you room to say yes to the right people.   If you need space, take it. Something wonderful might fill it.   And staying in a misaligned friendship doesn’t just drain you…it also keeps them stuck.   Sometimes losing access to you is the wake-up call they need. And even if it isn’t…You are still allowed to choose peace.   A final reminder: You can be a kind person…and still choose a hard ending. You can love someone…and still know they’re not safe for you. Hi Maude,   Here are my meeting pet peeves: * “Let’s wait for everyone to hop on.” = Why are we punishing the on time people!? * Everyone talks about the weather for the first five minutes (fake smiles all around 😬) * “Who wants to go next?” [Crickets 🦗] * No agenda, topic tangents, no way of getting back on track * You-know-who hijacks the topic …ok fine, that last bullet is usually me. I sometimes have a lot to say. I need meeting guard rails. We all do!   Why are we not taught how to have a good meeting?   If you are in any kind of professional role, meetings are required.   So today I want to give you a few science-backed, non-obvious ways to make your one-on-one meetings actually impactful. Let’s make meetings feel better: 1) Set-up a GOOD Routine   🛑 Stop starting your meetings with “How are you?” or “Been Busy.” This will immediately produce 5 minutes of autopilot small talk.   ✅ Instead make a ritual. "Tell me something good." Everyone has to QUICKLY go around share one good thing - big or small. It’s super engaging and a way to celebrate wins.   ➡️ Forward this email to your team and ask to try this new ritual.   2) Assign who goes next   🛑 How do you politely say: “Are you done?” You can’t really. Endless turn takers are meeting drainers and often you don’t know if they are done or WHO should go next. So they ramble and then say, “Who wants to go next?”    Awkward.   ✅ On our team we have a rule. You go, you wrap yourself up and then you assign someone next. Sounds like this:   “Wow, great job everyone on our launch. Thanks for your help. That’s it for me. Marti, do you want to update us on Vanessa’s event calendar?”   Done.   3) KPIs = Key Performance Indicators   Everyone should have updates in key areas of the business, their tasks or their role. Don’t know what they are? Start there.   The best way to measure success and feel like a meeting is going well is to:   → Measure, track and celebrate progress. KPIs are going well? Great, share it and celebrate it. → Measure, track and problem solve together. KPIs not going well? Problem solve as a team, go into solution mode and get into it together.   4) Ask for “friction,” not “feedback”   Feedback questions often get polite answers.   Instead, ask a question that invites truth without making it awkward:   “Where is this feeling harder than it should?”   This does two things: → It gives them permission to talk about obstacles. → It signals that struggle isn’t failure, it’s data. This is a magic phrase because “Harder than it should” removes blame and focuses on the system, not the person.   5) Use a 3-part momentum check   If you want a one-on-one to feel productive, you need momentum.   Use this structure: 1) What’s working? 2) What’s stuck? 3) What’s next?   Why it works: Our brains love progress markers.   This keeps the conversation from spiraling into vague feelings and turns it into forward motion. (And yes, it works in friendships and relationships too.)   If someone is overwhelmed, don’t ask them to decide everything.   Ask for the smallest next decision. Try: ✅ “What’s the next 10% of this?” ✅ “What’s the next move that would make you feel lighter?”   Why it works: big decisions trigger threat responses. Tiny decisions restore agency.   Agency is one of the fastest ways to reduce stress and increase motivation.   6) The most underrated meeting skill: protect the last 2 minutes   Here’s a weird thing about the brain: We remember endings more than middles.   So if you can, protect the last two minutes and do one of these: ✅ Appreciation: “Here’s something I’ve noticed you doing really well…” ✅ Support: “Where can I make things easier for you this week?” ✅ Connection: “What’s something you’re looking forward to outside of work?” Mini Challenge: Forward this email to someone you have meetings with and ask which tip they want to try in your next meeting.   And see what happens.    I have a feeling your meetings are about to get a lot more effective. Make your next meeting less awkward

Hi Maude,   The source of most social anxiety is this: Worrying what people think of you.   We worry people won’t like us, and that makes us try to hard.   We worry we are being weird, which makes us paranoid and actually act weird.   In this way awkwardness can be a bad loop.   I was in this loop...   And my mentor stopped me. She was like: ( https://www.instagram.com/p/DTv4Oe0juvw/?adt_ei=b%40email.gomodulr.com&utm_campaign=2%2F3++Worrying+what+people+think+about+you%3F&utm_content=Worrying+what+people+think+about+you%3F&utm_medium=email_action&utm_source=customer.io )   It doesn’t matter what people say about you… …unless you believe what they’re saying.   This changed the way I move through the world. It made me realize the hard truth: People will have opinions. Lots of them.   About your work, your choices, your personality, your pace, your ambition, your parenting, your goals, your boundaries, your confidence.   Some will be kind. Some will be careless. Some will be wildly wrong.   But the only opinions that truly shape your identity are the ones you internalize.   And that’s where most of us get stuck. We don’t just hear feedback. We absorb it.   Unless we decide to stop.   I have one goal with this email: Stop internalizing other people’s worries about you.   Most of the negative thoughts we carry were never yours to begin with.   They were someone else’s emotional projection that accidentally became your inner voice.   So today I want to give you a practice I use whenever someone’s opinion starts to stick.   When a comment hits you hard, ask:   1) Is this true? Not “does it hurt?” Not “does it scare me?” Just: Is it True?  2) Is this useful? Does it make you better, clearer, wiser, kinder, stronger? 3) Is this mine? Or am I carrying someone else’s insecurity like it’s a fact? Because criticism isn’t always information. Sometimes it’s just noise.   Here’s the part I don’t want you to forget: → You are allowed to reject stories that don’t serve you. → You can take feedback without taking on an identity. → You can listen without letting it label you. → You can consider without absorbing. → And if someone misunderstands you? That’s not a life sentence. That’s just… a moment.   So the next time someone says something about you that lands like a punch, pause and remember:   Their words aren’t your reality.   Your belief is.
