One of the ways that Old Happy culture makes us miserable is by
convincing us that we have to do everything, get everything, and
be everything. You spread your energy out in a million directions
trying to achieve this impossible task, leaving you overwhelmed,
dissatisfied, and exhausted.
Instead, I advise taking a different approach: prioritize that
which matters most to you, devoting your energy towards the few
things that really bring you joy. This weekend, try this five
minute exercise: write down a list of what is most important in
your life (if you aren't sure where to start, you can always try

1. Learning to understand, accept, and love ourselves.
2. Learning to understand, accept, and love others.
And when we feel trapped, or confused, or afraid, the best thing
we can do is remind ourselves of these tasks; and from there, ask
ourselves: what is the next step that we can take towards them?

It is so easy to get caught up in living on autopilot. We are so
focused on getting to a future someday that we forget to
experience this day. Here’s a helpful little trick you can use to
help with that pursuit.
Imagine that your future self traveled back to the present
moment, to stand right next to you, here and now.
What would they think of you? They would celebrate you—your
beauty, courage, energy, and hopes—as the incredible gifts they
are. They would recognize the determination that gets you out of
bed each morning, the strength you show even when you feel
uncertain, and the way you keep moving forward in the face of
challenges.
What would they notice? They’d see all the things you take for
granted—the people, moments, and small joys that you’ve grown
accustomed to. They’d remind you that these fleeting, ordinary
moments are the ones you’ll look back on with gratitude.
What would they want you to do? They’d urge you to cherish what’s
here and now, knowing that nothing in life lasts forever. The
challenges you face, the joys you experience, the connections you
have—all of them are temporary, precious, and worth your full
presence. And most of all, they would tell you to love yourself
as you are, and to love the people around you, in whatever way
you can.

Hi everyone,
It's hard, hard, hard right now. I want to give you a quick rule
of thumb that I've found especially helpful in times like these.
Aim to be at least 10% gentler than you normally are. With
yourself: giving yourself more grace, taking more time to rest,
doing more of what energizes you. With others: assuming that
they're struggling, too, that they feel as wrung out as you do,
and responding as you'd want to be responded to.
I'd tell you to be 50% or 100% more gentle, but for most of us,
that is too ambitious of a goal to start with—though I hope we
get there, together. A gentler goal, like this one, will help us
to practice that quality in the moments we need it most, and it
can serve as refrain to lean on when we don't know what to do
next or how to respond. Give it a try and let me know how it
goes.

Old Happy: I have to do it all perfectly.
New Happy: I just need to try my best.
Everyone reading this email has way too much to do every day. You
have responsibilities that matter to you, you have to-do lists
that never get finished, you have errands that must be run and
chores to complete, needs to satisfy and hopes to seek out.
To cope with this overwhelm, we try to cut back wherever we can.
We eliminate things from our lives. We try to be more efficient
with less. We prioritize and streamline and promise to say “No!”
more frequently.
And yet this doesn’t seem to work: we still feel too overwhelmed,
too busy, too committed.
That’s because we’re not addressing an equally-important part of
this challenge. We need to also shift our expectations about how
we do everything that we need and want to do.
Pause and get honest with yourself. What are you expecting of
yourself? If you can admit, “I’m expecting perfection in every
area of my life and in everything that I do,” you’re halfway to
freedom.
These expectations kick off an absolutely vicious Old Happy
cycle:
* You expect perfection.
* When you (of course!) can’t be perfect, you beat yourself up.
* You resolve to try even harder to succeed at this impossible
quest.
* That effort requires that you work harder and for longer.
* That makes you feel more stressed and overwhelmed.
* Those feelings make it far less likely that you’ll be able to
succeed at your tasks (let alone at the superhuman level you're
demanding.)
* The struggle to perform then leads to more feelings of shame
and more expressions of self-criticism…
* And on and on it goes.
Here's the good news: you can release these inhumane expectations
for yourself and, instead, accept that you are a human being, who
is absolutely wonderful and has very real limitations, including
the inability to do everything absolutely perfectly. Embracing
your humanity looks like:
* Leaving the dishes unwashed in the sink so you can play outside
with your kids.
* Not responding to emails as soon as you get them.
* Taking a ten minute walk when you don’t have time to do a full
workout.
It doesn't mean that you don’t care about doing well or giving
yourself fully to your life. It just means that you stop striving
for perfection everywhere and start looking to try your best
instead. Your best will look different from day to day and from
task to task. And that’s okay. More than that, it's completely
normal. Even more than that, it's good. It shows your humanity.

Hi everyone,
This week, as we watched astronauts take the first trip to orbit
the moon in fifty years, I was reminded about something I wrote
about in my book New Happy (

On January 31, 1971, Edgar Mitchell visited the moon as part of
the Apollo 14 mission. He was never the same again. As he
described it:
"You develop an instant global consciousness, a people
orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the
world, and a compulsion to do something about it."
Scientists call this 'the overview effect,' the profound sense of
awe that comes from seeing the Earth from a distance, and the way
it blows one's existing worldview to smithereens, resulting in a
new awareness of our interdependence.
We don't have to go to space to come to this realization, though
it certainly makes it easier. As they lifted off, the announcer
said, "The crew of Artemis II now bound for the moon, and
humanity’s next great voyage begins." I am in awe of their
actions, and I also believe that humanity's next great voyage is
here on Earth, where we must learn how connected we all are—and
that will be inspired by those who have briefly left us, who have
seen the truth which is most readily observed at a distance, and
then come back with another new urgent mission: to remind us of
what matters most.

Old Happy: I need to fix their suffering.
New Happy: I need to be there for them as they suffer.
It's hard to watch someone you love suffer. Sometimes, in trying
to alleviate their pain (and our own distress), we end up
accidentally hurting them:
* In ignoring their pain because we 'don't want to bring it up
and remind them', we can leave them feeling lonely.
* In trying to problem solve, we can leave them feeling ashamed.
* In trying to cheer them up, we can leave them believing that
their feelings don't matter.
Here's the single most important thing you can do that will help:
just be there with them. This can sound like an abstract idea, so
we've coined an acronym — LOVE — to help you put it into
practice.
Look at them: Give them your full attention. Don’t be scared or
shy away from their struggles. What do you see? What do you
sense? How might they be having a hard time?
Open up to their pain: Demonstrate that you want to know more
about their pain by asking questions. You might say something
like...
"What's it like managing [XYZ challenge] right now?"
"Will you tell me more about what that was like?"
"What are you feeling right now?"
Validate what they're experiencing: Whatever they share, reflect
it back to them, both to build your understanding and to honor
their experience.
"It sounds like you might be feeling overwhelmed. Is that right?"
"What you're facing is hard. Everyone would struggle with it."
"I'm hearing that you need me to do this household task and it
would make you feel more supported."
Express your love: Finally, tell them that you love them, a
sentiment that can take so many forms.
"I believe in you."
"I see how hard you're trying and how brave you are."
"You are not alone. We'll figure it out together."

Hi everyone,
In this week's newsletter, we're talking about the incredible
importance of listening—which I have come to believe is both the
secret to almost everything good in life and the secret to
solving almost all of our biggest problems. To kick it off, I

Studies have found that good listening has three key behaviors:
offering attention, seeking understanding, and conveying positive
intention.
Here are a few easy ways you can be a more present listener.
Give the other person your attention:
* Before you start the conversation, establish your capacity (“I
have twenty minutes to talk right now, and then I will have to
get back to work,” or “I need a bit of time to wind-down, and
then we can spend time together!”)
* In the conversation, minimize distractions (put your phone
down, turn off the television, choose an appropriate time for
in-depth conversations.)
Be curious:
* Summarize what they say (“It sounds like you’re saying…” and
“What I’m hearing is…”)
* Ask for clarification (“Am I getting this right?”)
* Invite them to go deeper (“Could you share more about that
experience?” or “What were you feeling in that moment?”)
Express care:
* Extend compassion (“That must have been so painful,” or “What
do you need right now?”)
* Point out their strengths (“Your courage in that moment was
awe-inspiring,” or “You always make me laugh.”)
* Share your gratitude (“This was such a great conversation," or
“I’m so thankful that you opened up to me.”)

Old Happy: "I need to try to please everyone.”
New Happy: "I need to act in alignment with my values.”
"How do I stop worrying about what other people think of me?"
It’s a question I hear all the time. And my answer is: you can't,
and more than that, you wouldn’t want to. Worrying about what
other people think of you is a sign that you are conscientious,
that you care about others, and that you are a part of a
community. To cast that off would make you far more unhappy than
anything you would gain.
But I understand what is driving it. You want to be free to act
in ways that are right for you. So here is a different question
that can yield more helpful results: “How do I stop allowing
other people’s opinions to dictate my choices?”
Here’s my recommendation.
Step 1: Get curious about your worries.
Who, specifically, are you worried about disappointing or
upsetting? State their names out loud. What makes you worry about
them in particular? Do you know for certain they will react in
this way?
What you might discover is that there aren’t any specific people,
but that instead, you’re worried about what everyone will think.
All people. Everywhere. If that’s the case, remind yourself that
there is no way to please everyone in the world, and if you try,
you will end up surely disappointing yourself.
Step 2: Identify the choice that’s most aligned with your values.
Your values are like a compass, guiding you towards what matters

)l is a great place to start. You can look at your list and
identify which choice helps you to most embody its items.
If the person whose opinion you’re worried about is someone who
really matters to you, it can sometimes be helpful to have an
open conversation about why you’re making this choice. Explain to
them what you want to do, why, and give them a chance to ask you
questions. It might actually present an incredible opportunity to
connect.
Step 3: Meet any uncomfortable emotions with compassion
After making this choice, you might notice some difficult
feelings coming up. Perhaps you run into someone whose opinion
you worry about, and you have an awkward conversation. Perhaps
someone makes a snide comment to you, and you have to stand up
for yourself. In these moments, treat yourself with compassion
and care. The discomfort is real and you are strong enough to
navigate it. Remind yourself that these choices mean that you are
living a life that's true to you — and that’s brave and
meaningful.

There is one profoundly simple strategy for more happiness that
almost no one uses — all because of Old Happy conditioning. It
is: find happiness in other people’s happiness.
In Old Happy culture, we’re taught that we’re separate from other
people. That means that, if something good happens to you, it
belongs to you and only brings you happiness (and I should be
jealous of you, because it means that I didn’t get those good
things and the happiness that they bring.)
What that means, though, is that your happiness is entirely
dependent on you, and making sure that things going well—for you
and for you alone. If you have a setback, or a bad day, or life
otherwise doesn’t go how you want it to go, you become unhappy.
But if you see that you are connected to others, then that all
changes. Because now, if something good happens to you, it also
happens to me. I can find joy in your joys, exactly the same way
I would for my own joys.
This perspective shift can completely change your life. It
removes so much of the pressure that we put on ourselves to
control and achieve and win. When the people in your life
succeed, or fall in love, or have a great day at work, or make a
difference for someone, or create something beautiful, you get to
feel that right alongside them.
So open up to it. Let yourself feel the joy of others as though
it was your own—because that's what makes it your own, too.

Your beliefs have a tremendously important job: they are there to
help you understand every single thing that ever happens to you,
to other people, and to the world.
Each day, you need to make so many decisions: not only what
you’re going to say and do, but also how to interpret everything
everyone else says and does. Your brain consumes 20% of your
body’s energy; even so, there’s no way that it can make all of
these decisions in a thoughtful, conscious way. It needs
shortcuts, and that’s what beliefs provide: a faster way to make
decisions, understand situations, and problem-solve.
Given this all-too-critical role, it’s important to take a
moment, every so often, and ask ourselves: are my beliefs
constraining me, or are they freeing me?
Constraining beliefs might sound like:
* I’ll never be able to achieve my dreams.
* Things just don’t work out for me.
* The world is a dangerous place, where you can’t trust anyone.
* I don’t have any control over my life.
Freeing beliefs might sound like:
* I’m capable of doing what I put my mind to.
* Things always work out, even if they don’t unfold in the way I
imagine they will.
* The world is full of good people who are working to make it
better.
* I can shape my life in the ways that matter to me.
If you discover that your beliefs are constraining you, here’s
the good news: you can change them with these three steps.
* Choose one constraining belief; for example, “I’m not lovable.”
* Then, identify a freeing version of that belief; for example,
“I’m surrounded by love.”
* Look for evidence that this belief is true; that could be
messages you get from friends, loving time spent with family
members, and moments of kindness that you witness in person or
online. Note them down, ideally in a place where you can refer
back to them in the future. With time, this new belief will
become easier to reach for, and then, instinctive.
And the even better news: when you do this exercise, it has the
power to shift multiple constraining beliefs. Recent neuroscience
research has found that like-beliefs tend to cluster together. If
you have one constraining belief, you probably have multiple
ones, for they reinforce and build upon one another. That means
that once you start to change just one of your beliefs, you’re
also starting to shift the other ones, too, without even trying.
Bit by bit, one belief at a time, you will set yourself free.

One of my favorite research findings: when one person in a
network becomes happier, it kicks off a chain reaction—not only
do their friends become happier, but then their friends do, too!
We are so powerfully connected to each other, in ways we cannot
truly understand, bound up in what Martin Luther King Jr. called
"an inescapable network of mutuality... where whatever affects
one directly, affects all indirectly." I think that it's time we
stop resisting this truth—to cease in hiding our real selves from
one another and in pretending we don't need each other—and

Hi everyone,
We talk all the time about how easy it is to feel hopeless about
the state of the world. But what we don’t talk about is how easy
it can be to restore someone else’s faith in humanity.
With one kind action, one compassionate gesture, or one
encouraging comment, you can remind someone that they are not
alone, that there are good people out there, and there is a
hopeful future waiting for them. What would it looked like if we
lived our lives with this in mind, viewing that as our most
important work—to renew another's belief in the goodness of
humanity, in whatever way we can?

New Happy: “They are telling the truth to help me."
You believe the negative words they speak. So why don't you
believe the positive ones? When you think about it, it's
completely irrational behavior: you either trust them or you
don't, and if you do trust them, then why would you question
their kindnesses?
Deep down, you might not believe that you actually deserve their
kind words. If that's the case, here's a perspective shift I'd
like you to consider trying on: sometimes, other people can see
you more clearly than you can see yourself.
Prove this to yourself by thinking about one of your own friends
or loved ones who does not see their own strengths. They fret
about their appearance—but all you see is their beauty. They
dismiss their contributions—but all you see is their impact. You
try so hard to get through to them ("You're wonderful, you're
gorgeous, you're doing so well!") and yet they never seem to
really hear you.
Could the same be true for you? Perhaps those people offering you
compliments are trying to help you see yourself. Perhaps you just
need to trust them. Perhaps you need to let their words in so
that you can start to feel, deep down, that you are deserving of
their kindness. Because that is the truth—you are.

When you have to hide who you are — you suffer.
When you can be who you are — you can feel more joy, build

That's why one of the greatest gifts we can receive from someone
is to be loved by them, exactly as we are. When someone accepts
our authentic self, they also encourage us to step into a new

transform.

successes. But it turns out that growth is also about what others
do for you.

I feel loved when someone remembers the little things about me:
whether that’s my favorite food or something I said a year ago
and everything in between.
When someone makes me feel heard, seen, included or considered.
Having deep conversations and traveling with friends makes me

Hi everyone,
Hope is not something that happens to you. It is something that
you make. You make hope by taking one small step towards your
goals. You make hope by helping someone. You make hope by
squaring your shoulders and saying, "I'll give it a try." You
make hope by refusing to give up on humanity. You make hope by
reaching out for support. You make hope by choosing a single
problem in the world that you want to see solved and doing
something about it.
And as you make hope for yourself, you also give other people a
reason to hope, too—reminding them, through your actions, that
there are good people around and there are better days ahead. As

As a result, many people learn to employ a specific strategy:
keep other people down. If you hurt others, it both quiets your
own insecurities and knocks them out of the field of competition,
clearing your path towards what you think you want. Many people
have tragically made this into a worldview, a lifestyle, an
organizing principle: I will find my own happiness by taking it
away from others.
But the truth, proven out in dozens of studies, is that keeping
people down will never make you happy. In fact, it's the
opposite. Bringing them up will make you happy. Showing them way
will make you happy. Helping them will make you happy.
The more that you focus on supporting and encouraging other
people, the better you start to feel about yourself. With every
kind act, you are proving to yourself that life is not a
competition. You are reminding yourself that you have your own
incomparable gifts and strengths. And with each loving action,
you are helping others to see the goodness that remains in
humanity.

Hi everyone,
This week I've been thinking about hope: the simple choice to
believe—even if only for a moment—that life can be different,
better, more joyful. It opens a window of possibility that can
change everything. For when you feel hopeful about the future, it
makes it easier to take action in the present; that action then
significantly increases the likelihood that the future will be
different; and when you arrive at that future moment that you had
once hoped for, you see the proof of the power of hope, making it
more likely you'll choose it again in the present for the new
future that now lies in front of you.
It's an upward spiral that begins with a few words. Try them with
me right now: I believe in my beautiful future. I trust that
things will get better. I know we can make the world we want to
live in.

I want to share a quote with you that I've been reflecting on
this week, from the poet June Jordan:
“Or maybe the purpose of being here, wherever we are, is to
increase the durability and the occasions of love among and
between peoples. Love, as the concentration of tender caring and
tender excitement, or love as the reasons for joy. I believe that
love is the single, true prosperity of any moment and that
whatever and whoever impedes, diminishes, ridicules, opposes the
development of loving is spirit is wrong/hateful.”
In the world right now, we are in desperate need of more love, in
all its forms. I hope her beautiful words will help you to embody
it, in whatever way calls to you, knowing that as you do, you are
fulfilling your greatest purpose.

Imagine having someone in your life who loves you for all that
you are. This person accepts and embraces every part of you. They
show you the best of you and encourage you to nurture it. They
celebrate your wins, they sit with you in your challenges, and
they remind you that you're never alone.
Now, remember this: you can be this person for someone. That's
how powerful your—and our—ability to love is. This isn't
something that has to be confined to a romantic relationship,
either; you can share your love with all of the people in your
life. Real love is something you don't run out of.
What makes people feel loved in this way is usually the little
things. This is backed up by research: one 2020 study found that
these small, everyday experiences of love are connected to higher
well-being — the more moments of love received, the happier they
were.
This weekend, sit down with someone who matters to you and as,
"What do you need right now?" Listen to what they say. Then, use
your creativity, care, and compassion to fulfill that need.
For example:
* “I need a break.” — Give them the night off from parenting,
surprise them with a trip to your favorite restaurant, or take on
one of their regular responsibilities.
* "I need appreciation.” — Find five ways to compliment them over
the next few days.
* “I need to connect.” — Ask them how they are feeling, go for a
walk and talk, or do something new and fun together.
And don't hesitate to ask for the same in return. Love builds
with every exchange.

In these first weeks of the year, as you work towards what

successes and setbacks.

new milestone, you could stay consistent with your routines, or
you might get quality time with loved ones.
And, at the same time, you might struggle with symptoms of an
illness, you could have a tough conversation with a client, or
you might hear some bad news.
Through it all, what matters most is this: remembering that no
matter what happens to you, or how things go in your pursuit of
these goals, you will always be worthy. Your success do not make
you 'better'; your failures don't make you 'worse'. You are
always, always worthy, just as you are.
