Hey , If you’re like me, you’ve probably heard of Google Tag Manager... .... and you know that it’s an often-recommended way to set up Google Analytics (and other tracking scripts on your website.) Maybe you even went to the Google Tag Manager website and attempted to set it up… … but then (if you’re also like me), you were instantly like, “OH, this is… a project…”, closed the tab and never made the time to come back to it. (Yeah, I see you!) If you’re reading this like, “OMG, yes, Erica. Are you spying on me??” No, no I am not. But I am writing this from personal experience, cause I did the exact same thing for YEARS. But one of my main goals for 2026 is to improve my analytics so that I have a better handle on what’s really working in my biz (on a granular level)… … so that I can lean hardest into the things that are actually growing my revenue and pull back on the things that aren’t. And step one of that process was FINALLY setting up Google Tag Manager. ------------------------------------------------------ So, what IS Google Tag Manager and why do you need it? ------------------------------------------------------ Google Tag Manager (GTM for short) is a free tool from Google that allows you to manage ALL tracking scripts on your website in one centralized place. Essentially, instead of adding your Google Analytics script, Facebook pixel, TikTok pixel, etc. to your website one at a time … … you JUST install the GTM script on your site and then add all the tracking codes within the GTM interface instead. This is better than installing each thing individually because…. 1) It’s easier to manage everything in one place. ------------------------------------------------- If you want to install another tracking script in the future, you can just pop it into Google Tag Manager and it will automatically be loaded on your website via GTM. GTM also tracks every change you make to your tracking scripts, which makes troubleshooting way easier if anything goes awry. 2) Faster performance --------------------- Having all your scripts load together, asynchronously, via GTM means faster website loading times…. … which is great for the user experience and for core web vitals (which then can indirectly benefit your Google rankings.) 3) Better data -------------- This is the item I’m personally most interested in. Google Tag Manager passes information from your website to your tracking tools inside something called a “data layer.” And YOU can dictate the type of information that gets passed along to all of your tracking tools via that data layer (like which product was purchased and at which price point, for example). This makes it way easier to have cohesive tracking for things like purchase conversions across all your tools (google analytics, email marketing, facebook audiences, etc.) 4) Superior legal compliance ---------------------------- This part is technical, but stick with me. There are A LOT of privacy regulations around tracking people’s behaviors on your website and it’s your duty, as a business owner, to stay compliant. In case you didn’t know… when people visit your website from certain countries (including the EU), legally, you need to get affirmative consent from them before your Google Analytics tracking script fires. I’ll spare you the full details in this email, but essentially, using Google Tag Manager in combination with a consent management platform (I use Complianz)… … allows you to be fully compliant with laws like GDPR… … while still getting anonymized signals and AI-modeled behavioral information for visitors who do not give you cookie consent (so that your analytics don’t have gaping holes in them.) So IF you currently have Google Analytics installed directly on your website… … and you are NOT using a consent management tool to block your scripts from firing before consent (when legally required)… … then you are likely NOT compliant with laws like GDPR. Aka… this really deserves your attention ASAP, or technically you can be at risk of fines. So anyway, long-story short, I am SO GLAD I moved this task to the top of the pile and FINALLY installed my analytics script via Google Tag Manager. It actually didn’t take nearly as long as I thought it would. Do analytics make you feel like you’re sapping the *soul* out of your content? ----------------------------------------------------------------- Like the moment you start thinking about what to create based on how it will perform, you suddenly lose all inspiration and creative drive? This is something I hear a lot from people online. So many of them love to create for creation's sake. Of course, they’d love to make money while doing it, but the second they have to put on their “business” hat, they clam up and want to bury their head in the sand. And I get it, I really do. When I first began food blogging (circa 2010!), it was a hobby born out of pure passion. I LOVED cooking and creating new recipes. (And I still do!) I’d spend all my free time daydreaming about new creations, shopping for ingredients, testing my ideas, and sharing them online for fun. Then one day, I learned about Google Analytics - a free tool you could set up to see how many people read your content and how they found it. Suddenly, I wasn’t creating into a void anymore. I could see exactly how many people read my content, where in the world they were visiting from, basic demographic information about them, and how they found my site. This blew my 23-year-old mind. I mean, how COOL was it to know that the food I shared from my tiny apartment in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was being enjoyed by people literally around the world?? That as I was shopping at the local farmers market, dozens of people were on my website at that very moment, reading my recipes?? And once I realized the reach that digital content could have (for free, by the way, just by publishing and sharing), I was hooked. Instead of feeling stifled by analytics, I was invigorated by them. Seeing which posts were most popular was like an instant feedback loop, helping me double-down on the content that my readers really liked… …which then helped me build stronger connections and loyalty with my audience, because they felt like I understood exactly what they wanted. In the process, I learned that having (and understanding) your data doesn’t make you less creative. It just makes your creativity more effective. I mean, think about it… ----------------------- 👉 If you pour your heart into a blog post, don’t you want to know whether it's actually helping people or just sitting there unread? 👉 If you spend hours crafting the “perfect” opt-in, don't you want to know if anyone's downloading it? 👉 If you show up on Instagram every day, shouldn't you know whether that traffic actually converts or just bounces? It’s true. There’s a feature on your website that tells you exactly what your people are looking for. But you’re probably not even tracking the data! That feature is… your site search bar. -------------------------------------- Literally, the search bar that people use to look for stuff on your site. This information is NOT tracked by default inside Google Analytics, but you can set it up! Here's what I discovered when I finally set up internal search tracking: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Top searches on The Unconventional RD site: * "resources" * "seo" * "workflow" * "black friday deals" * "course subscription" Now look at what I was actually creating content about: * Online business models * Optimizing for AI * Digital marketing trends * Black Friday deals My people were looking for concrete, actionable tidbits of advice (particularly a clear place to find my SEO resources and workflows) and my Search Savvy membership. But I was publishing way more advanced, trending information… … and perhaps forgetting to lead my website visitors to the basics first. So this was a good nudge to take a look and see whether it was extremely clear and obvious WHERE to find my membership and best SEO resources on my website. If not, that’s an extremely easy thing to quickly improve the user experience on my site. For my food blog, I looked at my site search queries to see what type of content my readers were looking for that I did NOT already have (or did not have a lot of). ----------------------------------------------------------------- I discovered that my people are particularly looking for recipes with Swiss chard, pork chops, pasta, shrimp, and corn. So that’s a good opportunity to see if I could create some new content featuring those ingredients. Some people searched for even more specific things, like “beef loin recipe,” “fettuccine with Italian sausage,” “chicken noodle soup,” “beef stroganoff,” or “cake with marmalade”. Again, these are REAL PEOPLE looking for these recipes from ME. So it’s easy inspiration that's validated in the real world. And finally, for my nutrition membership site, I use site searches to determine what topics my paying members are looking for that we have not already covered. ----------------------------------------------------------------- For example, people have searched for “lupus”, “berberine”, “creatine”, “LDL”, and “diverticulitis”, so we added those topics to our content suggestion database. I also discovered that people search for “handouts” quite often, which means we could probably make it more obvious where those items are on the website! So essentially, knowing what people search for on your website helps you understand: ----------------------------------------------------------------- * What content gaps you have (people searching but finding nothing) * What products to potentially create (high search volume = high demand) * What's confusing on your site (lots of searches for basic info means your nav is unclear) * What to optimize next (popular searches with poor results) Your visitors are basically doing free market research for you! They're telling you what content to create, what products might sell well, what's missing on your site, and what they actually care about (vs. what you assume they are about.) Pop quiz: How much of your traffic came from AI in the last 12 months? ----------------------------------------------------------------- ChatGPT? Perplexity? Claude? Gemini? I’d wager that you probably have no idea. But… there is a good chance that AI is sending you traffic right now. For example, if someone goes to ChatGPT and types, "Who is the best pediatric dietitian in Los Angeles?"... … if ChatGPT references you in its answer and provides a link, some people will click… … and you can track those clicks to your website! But Google Analytics doesn’t automatically categorize AI traffic for you, so most people have NO IDEA: ----------------------------------------------------------------- * How much traffic they're getting from AI tools * Which tools, specifically, they’re getting that traffic from * Whether it's growing or shrinking * If that AI traffic converts differently than Google or social media traffic And as we know, if you’re not tracking something, it’s hard to optimize for it. When I looked at my stats for The Unconventional RD, I found that I’ve gotten: ----------------------------------------------------------------- * 0.92% of my traffic from ChatGPT * 0.11% of my traffic from Gemini * 0.06% of my traffic from Perplexity * 0.02% of my traffic from Claude * 0.01% of my traffic from Grok So in total, 1.12% of my website visitors came from AI over the last 12 months. That’s actually a pretty minuscule amount, even though it is growing consistently over time. (For reference, in the prior 12 months I got 0.46% of my traffic from AI, and the year before that, just .03%) So while optimizing for AI is absolutely important, right now, in this exact moment, your other traffic sources are probably larger and should not be ignored. But if you want to go deeper, the next step is to assess the quality of that AI traffic. ----------------------------------------------------------------- For example, how do my email list sign-up rate, engagement rate, pages per session, and conversion rate compare for people who found me via AI vs more traditional avenues, like Google or social media? Many people find that AI brings them fewer, but higher-quality visitors. Likely because people are asking AI extremely specific questions, and your website is presented to exactly the right person, at the right time in their discovery journey. So if you find that you are getting an increasing percentage of your traffic from AI and that those visitors are high-quality, then it’s likely worth setting aside some time to optimize your web presence for AI in 2026. For now, let me show you how to see the amount of traffic you’re getting from AI. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The simplest way is to just do a manual check inside Google Analytics by going to Acquisition → Traffic Acquisition: ​ And then changing the dimension shown in the table to “Traffic source --> Session source / medium.” ​ Adjust the date range to whatever you want and scroll through the table and look for anything that says chatgpt, gemini, claude, grok, perplexity, etc: ​ In the columns to the right, you’ll also be able to see how many sessions you received, what % of your total traffic came from various AI tools, and some engagement metrics. Add the number of sessions (or % of traffic) from each AI platform together to find the total amount of traffic you received via AI during the given time period. That’s it! Getting traffic from ChatGPT? (Here’s how to tell.)

I’ve got a *real quick* exercise for you. Just answer these three questions about your blog: 1. Which post got the most traffic last month? 2. Which post drove the most email signups last month? 3. Are they the same post? ... Here's what I see happen a lot: ------------------------------- Most bloggers can quickly answer question #1... ... but question #2 trips people up. Content creators tend to check their traffic constantly, and they know which posts are popular at any given moment. But many times, they're not paying attention to which content is actually growing their owned audience (aka their email list). And when they DO finally check... they discover they're completely different posts. The post with the most traffic might have zero email signups, while your #1 email driver might not even be in your top 10 most-read posts! Let’s flesh this out with a real example: ----------------------------------------- My most popular blog post of 2025 was about using Facebook groups to grow your business. It consistently brings in hundreds of readers from Google every single month... … but it’s not even in my top 20 best-converting posts for growing my email list! And if you’re not paying attention to this stuff, it’s easy to accidentally celebrate (and double down on) the wrong things. Sure, I could easily create more posts about Facebook groups, and that might bring more eyeballs to my website… … but if it’s not attracting the right person who would actually join my list and buy my stuff… … then what’s the point, right?? (Unless you're focused on monetizing with display ads, which I am not.) So here's your homework: ------------------------ Try to answer those three questions I listed above. Oops.. my most-read blog post doesn't grow my list.

Almost nothing tops the excitement of a sales notification coming in. Yahoo!! All your hard work is paying off! But… have you ever stopped to ask WHERE that customer came from? Was it: ------- * That Pinterest pin you posted last week? * The Instagram story link? * Your email newsletter? * That guest post you wrote? * The link in your podcast show notes? I’d wager that most people have no idea. (Myself included, most of the time.) You know someone bought, so something you’re doing is working. And you carry on. Doing A LOT, but never *quite* knowing which content channels are the engines behind your business. And truthfully, you can carry on like that for quite some time. But as you grow and continue to layer on new content formats and channels, if you don’t have extreme clarity on what’s actually working and worth your time… … it is incredibly easy to over-commit and burn yourself out. (Speaking from personal experience here.) HOWEVER… There IS a solution! ----------------------------- It’s called UTM parameters. (I know, it sounds technical. Stick with me.) UTM parameters are tiny pieces of code you add to your links that tell Google Analytics exactly where traffic came from. Instead of just "Pinterest," for example, you can track: * Which specific pin * Which board * Which call-to-action * Even which graphic design performed better So when someone clicks your link and eventually buys, you can trace it back to the exact source, inside Google Analytics. And you can do this ANYWHERE you share your links. Here's a more concrete example: ------------------------------- Let’s pretend I promote a $300 course in four places: * Evergreen email sales funnel * Newsletter footer * Instagram stories * YouTube videos Without UTM parameters, Google Analytics just shows: ---------------------------------------------------- * "Email: 283 visitors" * "Instagram: 125 visitors" * "YouTube: 89 visitors" Okay... but which ones CONVERTED? With UTM parameters, I can see: ------------------------------- * Sales funnel: 200 visitors, 10 sales ($3000 revenue) * Newsletter footer: 83 visitors, 0 sales ($0 revenue) * Instagram story #1: 25 visitors, 0 sale ($0 revenue) * Instagram story #2: 100 visitors, 3 sales ($900 revenue) * YouTube Video #1: 42 visitors, 0 sales ($0 revenue) * YouTube Video #2: 47 visitors, 0 sales ($0 revenue) Now I know... ------------- ✨ My evergreen sales funnels are the #1 driver of revenue in my business. ✨ Passive newsletter links don't do much. ✨ My second Instagram story crushed it. ✨ YouTube videos don't convert directly to paid customers. And based on that information, I can... --------------------------------------- 👉 Double down on activities that grow my email list (and thus, my evergreen funnels) 👉 Replace my newsletter footer link with a paid sponsorship instead 👉 Learn which style of Instagram story resonates the best with my audience 👉 Understand that my YouTube viewers aren’t ready to buy immediately after watching a video, but they opt into my email list at high rates. So, I tweak my strategy to promote my freebies on YouTube instead of my paid products (they’ll get pitched those later, when they’re already on my list) See how incredibly actionable and useful this information is?? -------------------------------------------------------------- Now, it’s not 100% foolproof, since some people will manually remove UTM parameters from their links (it’s the stuff in a link that shows up at the end of the URL, after “/?”)... ... some browser privacy settings can strip UTM parameters... and ad blockers can interfere with them as well BUT you should still be able to track and attribute the majority of your sales. Here are some examples of what you can track with UTM parameters: ----------------------------------------------------------------- * Social media posts (which channels and posts actually drive traffic that converts) * Email campaigns (which topics and CTAs work best) * Guest posts and collaborations (is this partnership worth it?) * Paid advertising (which placement or design is performing best?) * Podcast show notes (is my podcast driving business growth?) * Your Google Business Profile link (is local SEO paying off?) Without UTM tracking, you are stuck guessing about what *actually* converts. But with UTM tracking, you KNOW. Real quick, I want to share something I found inside my Google Analytics that made me rethink where I spend my time online. And then I want YOU to do a similar quick check and let me know what you find. I’m genuinely curious! Okay, here it is: ----------------- I checked to see which social media platform sends me the most engaged visitors. The ones who spend the most amount of time on my website. I thought it would most likely be Facebook, since that’s where I’ve historically spent most of my time… … but guess what? It was actually THREADS. For some context, the average person who visits my website from a social media platform only spends 22 seconds on my site before leaving. But people from Threads spend 1 minute and 24 seconds before leaving. That’s nearly 4x more engagement than average. To my surprise, Facebook actually underperformed on engagement, with the average visitor spending only 19 seconds on my site. So while I don’t spend a ton of time on social media in my business (and it’s my least engaged segment of traffic overall)... … digging into my analytics helped me see that it may be worth spending more time on Threads than I initially thought. So here's the quick win I want to give you: ------------------------------------------- Open Google Analytics. Go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Adjust the date to the last year. Look at your high-level traffic sources. (Organic Search, Organic Social, Organic Video, Email, Referral, Direct, etc.). Now look at the “Average engagement time per session” column. Which source has the LONGEST average engagement? Which has the shortest? That's it. Takes about 30 seconds. But it tells you tons of cool, high-level info. For example, if your most engaged channel is: * Referrals… Double-down on networking in your niche, creating link-worthy content, getting interviewed/quoted/mentioned and collaborating with other people. * Organic search… Keep creating highly-engaging content around the keywords your people are searching for. * Email… Prioritize growing your list and sending consistent emails every week. * Organic social… Keep posting on the channels driving that traffic, cause it’s clearly resonating! For each channel, you can dig deeper to see things like which specific websites or social channels are sending you the most (or best) traffic… … but it gets a little more complicated to find that info, so I decided to stick with an easy, high-level win inside this email, to start. So the question is… Now that you know which marketing channel brings you the highest quality visitors… … will that change your content strategy for 2026? Personally, I’m going to consistently post on Threads for the rest of the year and see what happens. It’s just short-form text posts, so it actually works very well for this season of life with 2 young kids. And if it ends up paying off by attracting my ideal customers, that will be a big win! So log into your Google Analytics account and check your engagement stats asap. It *might* make you rethink where you invest your time for the rest of the year. Facebook vs Threads: Which reigns supreme?

Hey {First Name}, So many people I chat with are in the same boat. They’re consistently creating content, they’re getting decent traffic to their website… …but they’re just feeling kind of… stuck. They’re saying things like -------------------------- * "My traffic is great, but why isn't my email list growing faster?" * "I'm ranking for tons of keywords, so why aren't more people buying?" * "I get thousands of visitors a month, but my income feels stuck." They feel like they’re “doing everything right” but not seeing the business results they expected. But when you really dig into it and ask questions like: ------------------------------------------------------- "Which of your posts are converting the most people to your email list?" … They’re not sure. "Which traffic sources bring you the most revenue?" …. They don’t know. "What’s your conversion rate from visitor to customer?" … They’re uncertain. This is NOT meant to shame anyone. We ALL start somewhere (and that somewhere usually doesn’t involve having a firm grasp on your analytics.) I feel like the world is divided into two types of people… Those who LOVE data and can get lost crunching numbers all day…. … and those who absolutely despise it and rarely ever open their analytics. Okay, maybe there’s a 3rd camp of people (ahem, including myself) who enjoy analytics but never quite seem to get around to optimizing the data they’re collecting! If you’re in camp 2 or 3… hear me out. -------------------------------------- I get it. “Analytics” sounds technical and boring. But rather than thinking about numbers, think about the actionable insights that data gives you. For example… ------------ Let’s say you write a blog post. You publish and promote it. Now what? WITHOUT analytics, you know: ---------------------------- * The post exists * Some people probably read it * That's... it WITH analytics, you know: ------------------------- * Exactly how many people read it * Where they came from (Google? Pinterest? AI? Email?) * Whether they stuck around or bounced immediately * If they clicked to other posts * Which other content they consumed after * Whether they joined your email list * If they bought anything Essentially, analytics help you track what's happening in your business so you can make smart decisions. It answers questions like: -------------------------- * "Should I write more posts like this one?" (Yes, it converts at 12%) * "Is Pinterest worth my time?" (No, that traffic bounces immediately) * "Why aren't people buying?" (They're dropping off at the pricing page) Without this information, you're really just guessing and making business decisions based on how you’re feeling in the moment. But with the RIGHT data, you can build your business SO much more strategically (and effectively). I guess that's really what analytics is... the difference between guessing and knowing. Hey , If you’ve been creating SEO optimized content for a while, you are probably VERY familiar with the metrics we all used to optimize for: ----------------------------------------------------------------- * Pageviews * Sessions * Time on page * Ad impressions And back when the “Publisher Model” was thriving, that made total sense. Those metrics told us exactly whether or not our content was working and our business was growing. Maybe for you it was gradual… maybe it was sudden…. But at some point, you likely stopped being just a publisher running ads and started building an actual online business with your own products, services, memberships, and/or courses. And suddenly, those old metrics don't tell the whole story anymore. Because now you need to know: ----------------------------- * Not just how many people came, but which ones joined your email list * Not just pageviews, but conversion rates * Not just traffic sources, but which sources bring buyers vs. browsers * Not just rankings, but which content actually leads to sales More pageviews doesn't automatically mean more revenue anymore. When you’re selling something to your audience, you don’t need mass amounts of traffic… … you need smaller amounts of the RIGHT traffic (aka people who will go on to become customers and raving fans). But making this transition is not super intuitive! -------------------------------------------------- So many of us are still checking the same reports, celebrating the same wins, and potentially not measuring our success in the best way anymore. I see this everywhere. Including in my own business. ---------------------------------------------------- I'll get excited about a traffic spike, then realize... none of those visitors joined my list or bought anything. Or I'll stress about a ranking drop, then discover it was for a post that never converted anyway. If you’re not careful, it’s easy to optimize for the wrong things because you’re measuring the wrong things. So over the next few months, I'm rebuilding my entire analytics system. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I’m not totally dropping SEO or ignoring the traffic to my website. (That stuff still matters!) But I’m getting savvier (pun intended) about understanding more than just my traffic metrics, including: * Which content builds my email list * What converts visitors to customers * Which traffic sources bring buyers * Where people drop off in my funnel * What the actual ROI is on my marketing efforts This is the transition I'm making right now in my own businesses… … and I'm guessing you might be making it too! The metrics that used to matter (and what matters now)

Last week I had one of those reality-check moments… --------------------------------------------------- … for 2026, I set a goal to add 10 new members per month to my nutrition membership site ( https://327f7a07.click.convertkit-mail.com/mvue8grmk2h5hqv7qx2umhr22m2qqfqez8pq970rn0pl4z4zo88427gvwooo9doogq90rexpq29np406qn97275w46lken9p5qqve0lmle8q7vkq3mro5l7orm4cwnee/kkhmh2unzpdowqsk/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZnVuY3Rpb25hbG51dHJpdGlvbmxpYnJhcnkuY29tLw== )… … but what was I actually doing to make that happen?? Spoiler alert… so far, I had done nothing. No formal selling to my audience. Zip. Zilch. Nada. For the last year, I relied solely on word of mouth, partnerships, a brief CTA in the footer of my emails, and blog content to promote our offer. But the reality is… content ≠ sales. ------------------------------------ You actually have to pitch your offers to your audience. (Shocker, I know. 😅) Without any intentional promotions, only ONE person joined the membership in the first half of January. (And for 2025, we only averaged 4 new members per month. For a $19.99/mo product, that just wasn’t cutting it.) So, I dusted off my keyboard and scheduled out a few sales emails. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I offered 20% off annual memberships for a 4-day sales window, after which the price would return to normal. I think I sent 3 emails total. And guess what? --------------- 12 new people joined the membership during the sale (!!!!) (Roughly a 50-50 split between annual and monthly memberships.) That’s over $1,000 in NEW revenue + another $100+/mo in recurring revenue that did not exist before January…. … simply because I got out of my own way and actually presented my offer to my audience. So my question to you is… ------------------------- ARE you actually selling to your audience?? Or are you so focused on creating free content and growing your audience that you’ve forgotten to promote consistently? ersonally, I dislike the process of selling/launching… ​ … so for The Unconventional RD brand, I built automated funnels that basically pitched on autopilot FOR ME every few months (which was amazeballs, btw.) But for this nutrition membership site, I haven’t set up any funnels like that yet. So if I’m not extremely intentional about scheduling promotions, sales can stagnate. And I’d guess that MANY of you can relate. So, this email is just a friendly reminder to get out of your own way! ----------------------------------------------------------------- Tell people about your paid offers and LET THEM pay you for your work! After all, you built your offer(s) to HELP your audience, right?? So don’t hide them away! My challenge to you is to send at least ONE formal sales pitch to your email list in Q1 this year. You don’t need to overcomplicate it. Sending broadcast emails to your whole list is a perfectly fine way to start. Then, once you have some email sequences that convert well, you can set up automations that pitch for you on autopilot.
