With a blend of decent critical thinking + a loud mouth, I could fix things before the meeting was over. That skill built my career. It is also, it turns out, the single most counterproductive thing I do to myself. I found this out the hard way when I started coaching. 2 decades of being paid decent money to solve problems all day means it’s really hard to stop wearing the problem-solver hat. Someone would come to me with something they were struggling with and my brain was already 3 solutions deep before they’d finished talking. And it’s not just coaching. A friend calls because they’re going through something and I go straight into what worked for me, what I’d do, what I read. If I’m being honest, I tend to love talking about myself…. and I have a whole newsletter about it, in case you hadn’t noticed. It comes from a good place, I swear! Ok maybe with a dash of self-centeredness. But coaching made me realise something uncomfortable: my clients don’t actually want to be told whatto do. That’sthe whole point. And you probably don’t either. If being told what to do worked, we’d all be super fit, sleeping 8 hours a night, and running wildly successful businesses by now. That urge to fix, the one where you hear a problem and immediately go for the solution, has a name. And psychologists have been studying it for over 40 years. I’m 4 months into a year-long trip through Latin America, doing work I chose and living a life I spent 2 years building. And the thing that’s surprised me most since we started travelling? The guilt. Not about anything specific. Just a constant you should be working right now every time I’m not at my laptop. 18 years of corporate life + a deeply type A brain will do that to you. So there I was, sitting by the beautiful Bacalar lagoon in Mexico, and my brain’s contribution? You should be further along with your business by now. She was on one of the biggest podcasts in the world (you know the one, tens of millions of downloads every month), super confident and articulate and full of bold claims about nutrition and what was slowly killing us all. So I did what I should have done before handing over my hard-earned cash and I looked into who she actually was. She wasn’t qualified to make half the claims she was making. The “science” was cherry-picked, oversimplified, or flat-out wrong. And the host never pushed back on a single thing. I felt like such a fucking idiot. I still CRINGE! I’m educated, I’m a health coach, I know how to read research, and I still fell for it. If it wasn’t a Kindle copy, I would have burnt that fucking book. Now I’m more skeptical. I check credentials and I look at the research. I check if the person is actually qualified to say this, or are they just confident and well-marketed. Because the wellness space is flooded with charismatic people saying things that sound true but aren’t. And the cost of bad advice isn’t just wasted money. It’s wasted time, misplaced trust, and sometimes real harm. The exercise that surprises most people

Hey friend, Here's something I noticed about myself that took an embarrassingly long time to figure out. My calm, well-rested self would sit down on a Sunday and design a beautiful plan. Wake up at 6. Meditate. Journal. Gym before work. Meal prep on Sundays. It looked so reasonable on paper. Then my actual self, the one who'd had three meetings run over and hadn't eaten since noon, would look at that plan at 6pm on a Tuesday and think: absolutely not. I spent years assuming the problem was discipline. That if I just wanted it enough, tried harder, found the right app or the right system, I'd finally close the gap between the plan and the execution. I didn't. Because they were being made by two completely different people. New plan, new system, same result

​ I'm going to be honest: I'm a little emotional writing this. I built something. From scratch, across six countries, in between bus rides and Airbnb check-ins and more Descript exports than I care to count. I've been a coach for 2 years now, and this is the very first time I've taken everything I've learned and put it somewhere people can actually use it, at their own pace, without needing me in the room. It opens today. Here's why I built it. A few years ago, I was running on red wine, caffeine, and cortisol. Smoking 20 cigarettes a day while downloading meditation apps. Making the same promises every Sunday night and breaking them by Wednesday. Every time something didn't work, I added something new. A new app. A new routine. A fresh-start Monday. I never once thought to ask: what if the problem isn't that I'm not doing enough? What if I'm doing too much of the wrong stuff? Then I burned out. Spectacularly. It’s not that you’re not trying hard enough. You’re trying too much. I’ve done maybe 20% of that list and I’m not really sure what happened to the other 80%. So why am I telling you this? Because you probably do the same thing, just with different scenery. Maybe yours is Sunday evening, planning a beautiful week that falls apart by Wednesday. Maybe it’s the 1st of January, buying a gym membership and a juicer and genuinely believing you’ll actually use both. Maybe it’s the first Monday back from holiday, convinced you’ll keep that rested, relaxed energy going (narrator: they did not keep that energy going). Same move every time. You feel calm, rested, optimistic, and you make plans from that place. Then real life shows up and the person who actually has to execute those plans is tired, stressed, and one minor inconvenience away from a meltdown. No, I’m not talking about my husband. He’s absolutely wonderful. I’m talking about someone who would make promises every Sunday night like “this is the week I’m going to eat better, sleep more, stop smoking, stop drinking, exercise, meditate, journal, be a better human....” And usually by Wednesday she’d broken half of them. By Friday she’d totally given up. By Sunday she was back making the same promises with the same conviction, pretending last week didn’t happen. Obviously, that person was me. And the worst part wasn’t the failing, it was what came after. The way I spoke to myself would have 100% ended ANY friendship. What is wrong with you? You KNOW what to do. Why can’t you just DO it? You’re 35, for fuck’s sake. Does this sound familiar? We’ve been taught that this is how change works, right? Be hard on yourself. Hold yourself accountable. Discipline yourself into the person you’re supposed to be. And if that doesn’t work, try harder. Want it more. Wake up earlier. Hustle harder. Cool, and how’s that going for you? Because when you bully yourself into better habits, your brain registers the self-criticism as a threat. Cortisol floods your system. Your prefrontal cortex (the part that makes good decisions) goes offline. And you reach for the exact thing you were trying to quit, because your nervous system is in survival mode and needs comfort. For me it was wine and cigarettes. And this is why you eat the whole packet of biscuits after telling yourself you’d only have one. Because guilt literally hijacks the part of your brain that regulates decisions. There’s a lot of research that shows, for example, that dieters who beat themselves up after a “slip” don’t recover. They eat more. And the ones who shrugged it off and gave themselves a break and a dose of self-compassion got back “on track” almost immediately. Same behaviour, same slip, but completely different outcome. Based entirely on how they spoke to themselves after the so-called fuck-up. Every time you’re unkind to yourself for skipping a workout, or procrastinating, or having too much fast food, you’re not motivating yourself. Actually, you’re making it harder to try again tomorrow. All that self-punishment isn’t keeping you in line, it’s the thing keeping you stuck. (Side note: this is also why the “I’ll start fresh on Monday!” cycle exists. You’re not resetting. You’re just recovering from the shame of last week long enough to try again. It’s a Design Problem. ************************************************************* ​ I’m writing this from Brazil, a month into our year-long Latin America adventure. And I’ll be honest: my habits are a fucking mess right now. In Singapore, I had my routine on point. Perfected over years. Wake up at 6. Coffee. Deep work on my outdoor terrace with the sound of the birds (which was often when I wrote because it was sooo quiet). Gym at 10am. Shower, brunch, back online feeling like I’d already won the day. Evening walk to get some steps and fresh air. It worked beautifully. I was consistent. Productive. I felt great! And then a month ago I became a nomad and all of it blew up. New timezone. New hotel or AirBnB every few days. Gyms aren’t always great. No familiar coffee spots. The structure that made consistency easy? Gonezo. I preach this constantly. But I’d forgotten what it actually feels like: I wasn’t more disciplined in Singapore. And neither are the people you admire. They’re just living in environments that do more of the work. Discipline Isn’t the Problem ---------------------------- A study by researchers at the University of Chicago. tracked people’s daily temptations and self-control and here’s what they found: People with high self-control don’t actually resist more temptations than the rest of us. ​ They encounter fewer of them. They’ve set up their lives so discipline isn’t required as often. The decision is already made. The friction is already removed. The environment does the work. That’s not willpower. That’s design. The five things working for you (or against you) ------------------------------------------------ When I say environment, I don’t just mean your physical space (though that matters). Your environment is everything that shapes what you do without thinking * Physical space: Where things are. What you see first. What’s easy to reach. * Time structure: When you do things. What’s protected. What gets squeezed. * Tools and systems: What’s automated. What requires decisions. What creates friction. * People: Who you’re around. What’s normalised. What’s expected. * Energy patterns: When you’re sharp. When you’re depleted. What you’re asking of yourself and when. My Singapore routine worked because every part of my environment supported it. The terrace made deep work inviting. The 10am gym slot meant I went when I had energy, not when I was depleted. The evening walk was easy because the weather was cooler at that time and the route was familiar. I wasn’t resisting temptation. I’d designed temptation out. Now, in Brazil, I’m rebuilding from scratch. And it’s humbling AF. Because health coach or not, without the environmental support, I’m just a person with good intentions and average willpower. Like everyone else. Meanwhile, in gyms everywhere... -------------------------------- Right now, millions of people are trying to be more disciplined. More gym sessions. Better sleep habits. Less scrolling. More reading. And most of them are relying on willpower to make it happen. Last Friday was Quitter’s Day. The second Friday in January. Strava coined the term after their data showed 80% of people have abandoned their resolutions by this point. 80%! And that’s not because 80% of people are lazy. When you’re stressed or tired, your brain deprioritises long-term thinking. It shifts into “let’s just get through today” mode, chasing quick rewards and avoiding effort. That’s not a ‘mindset issue’. That’s a stressed nervous system doing its job. Discipline is a backup generator. ​ It’s not meant to power the whole house. Flip the question ----------------- Instead of asking “How can I be more disciplined?”, ask: “What would make this easier?” What’s creating friction? What decision could be made in advance? What’s in my environment that pulls me off track? What’s missing that would make the right choice obvious? When I had my Singapore routine, I didn’t decide to write in the morning. The terrace was already there. The coffee machine always ready. The birds singing anyway. Writing at that time was the path of least resistance. Now I need to rebuild that. Find the equivalent. Design the conditions where consistency becomes the easy option, not the hard one. That’s the work. Not more discipline. Better design. Your experiment this week: -------------------------- Pick one habit you want to build. Now ask yourself: What’s one thing in my environment making this harder than it needs to be? Not your motivation. Not your discipline. Your environment. The physical space, the timing, the friction, the energy patterns. What’s one small tweak that would make the right choice easier? The bottom line --------------- You’re not less disciplined than the people you admire. You just have a harder setup. That’s a design problem. And the good news is that design can be changed. This is what I’m rebuilding right now while on the road. Finding the new defaults that make consistency possible without struggling every day. It’s not about trying harder.
