This is Poppy and Pepper. They are five months old and were found on the back of a truck travelling from Melbourne to Adelaide. Nobody knows exactly how they got there. Nobody knows who put them on it, or whether it was an accident or just a moment of desperation. What we do know is that they ended up at an animal shelter… two tiny kittens, completely out of place and then a carer took them in temporarily while the shelter figured out their next step. That's where we found them, months later. We went in thinking we'd adopt one. But when the shelter showed us their paperwork, my wife and I looked at each other and couldn't say a word.  Same birthday. 5 November 2025. Born together, travelled together, waited together. We couldn't separate them. We walked in for one cat and walked out carrying two sisters.  Over 10 years ago, my family had a Rottweiler named Nala. She was beautiful and completely destructive, and eventually we had to make the hardest call. Our backyard was just too small for her. She needed space we couldn't give her. So we gave her up for adoption. I still think about Nala. My wife still gets teary when her name comes up. We've wondered for years whether she found a home with room to run, someone who loved her the way she deserved. That regret doesn't fully go away… We still carry it.  We couldn't fix what happened with Nala. That chapter is closed. But when we finally had the space and the stability to bring an animal into our home, adopting felt like the only thing that made sense. Some mistakes don't come with a fix. You live with the guilt, replay the decision, wish it different and none of it changes what happened.  What I've learned is that self-forgiveness isn't a feeling you wait for. It's a decision you make, and then you back it up with action. You can't rewrite the past. But you can write what comes next. You can take the weight of that regret and turn it into something… not to cancel out what happened, but to add something good to the ledger. Poppy and Pepper are our answer. Just two small lives that needed exactly what we had to give, right now, in this season of our life. And I wonder… is there something like that for you Maude? Something you've been carrying that you can't fix, but haven't yet answered? You don't need to erase it. You just need to find the next right thing you can do, and do it. That's all self-forgiveness really is. Not feeling better about the past. Doing better in the present ♥️ Sometimes the good you put into the world doesn't go back to where it came from. The one time I log into my personal account, I see this photo… lol, how disappointing.https://www.vinhgiang.com/ Hey Maude, Look at this photo. That's me in 2014 about to present for the University of Adelaide. It was a free event they put on for the students and if you're counting the audience, yes. Three people.  I'd completely forgotten this moment. If it wasn’t for bloody facebook memories, I probably would have erased this embarrassing moment from my brain forever lol  It's so easy to look at someone who's had a measure of success and assume it was always been that way. You might have thought I had always been a great communicator. That the rooms I spoke in were always full. And that my career always made sense. None of that was true. I stood in that room in 2014 and I was convinced.. in my bones convinced, that this wasn't going to work. That I was chasing something that wasn't for people like me. And the question I kept asking myself was...  **"What if it doesn't work?"** I'd been asking that question my whole life. And when I ask myself that question over and over again, all it does is scare me and I end up convincing myself to play small.  So I decided to ask myself the same question but with a twist. Just change out the word **doesn’t** for **does**.  **"What if it does work?"** And with this question, I now started to feel inspired, motivated and excited. And somehow, following that question was the first step that led me towards a full blown speaking career, speaking to thousands of people. This August, I'm speaking at the MDRT Global Conference in Sydney, the Million Dollar Round Table, bringing together the world's elite financial professionals from 80+ countries. More than 5,000 people in the room. From three people... to five thousand.  Now here's the bit my publishers keep trying to take out of my book, which is exactly why I'm putting it in this newsletter instead: **"To become great, you first have to be a little bit sh*t."** I stand by it. Completely. And will still fight for it to be in the book lol Every remarkable person you admire was once genuinely terrible at the thing they're now remarkable at. The difference between you and them isn’t necessarily talent, it's tolerance - that willingness to be bad at something long enough to get good. To show up to the room of three without walking out. To ask the embarrassing question. To make the cringey video. To do the work that no one sees, that doesn't look promising,  and that probably won't go anywhere... yet. The world is full of people avoiding being a little bit sh*t.. And that's the opportunity 🤓 What's the thing you keep putting off because you're scared of being a little bit sh*t?? I can't believe I walked into one of my high school bullies. So. Awkward Hey Maude, A few weeks ago I took my family back to Salisbury Downs, the suburb I grew up in. I wanted to show my kids where their dad used to hang out. The food court I worked at as a teenager. The shopping centre we used to shop at. The whole neighbourhood that shaped the early version of me. https://gifts.vinhgiang.com/vg-live-class We're walking through the shops, my wife beside me, my kids pointing at things, and I'm mid-sentence telling them about this place.. when I see him. One of the guys who used to bully me at school. Our eyes meet. And I know immediately that he remembers me, and he knows I remember him. Everything from 25 years ago is somehow right there in the air between us. And the air was THICK. I felt something I wasn't expecting. I stood up straighter - my body did that before my brain could catch up. But somewhere underneath that, I felt something I hadn't felt in a long time. I felt scared. We didn't say a word to each other. Just awkwardly walked past, both of us pretending we don't remember one another. My wife grabbed my arm the moment he was out of earshot. **"Who was that? What was that all about??"** I told her. She paused for a second then: **"You let that man bully you!? He's half your size!? HAHA"** Yeah, she laughed. That’s my wife for ya lol And the crazy part is, even after 25 years I remember exactly what he used to say. I showed up to school one day wearing all white. I'd seen the Backstreet Boys do it in a music video and I thought… that's what I'm wearing for casual day. I felt cool for about five seconds. Then: **"Do you think you're in a boyband or something?? You try-hard."** And every time after that, when I tried something new, he had something ready. **"Why are you trying to be like Jason? Try-hard."** **"You're such a try-hard, dude."** After enough of those - I stopped. I stopped experimenting. I accepted the mold: the awkward, nerdy, chubby, funny-sounding Asian kid. And I told myself that was just who I was. Reflecting on this as a man about to turn 40, I've realised the worst part wasn't him. The worst part was that **I** was the one who decided to stay inside the mold he helped create. Standing there, I thought: what if I never broke out of it? I wouldn't be the version of Vinh you know. Here's what I've learned after years of teaching communication: the thing that holds most people back isn't a lack of knowledge. It's not a lack of confidence. It's not even fear. **It's a mold.** A set of default behaviours - the way you freeze before you speak, the way your voice lifts at the end of sentences, the way you fill pauses with umm, ahh, err. Habits you've repeated so many times they stopped feeling like habits and started feeling like **you.** The longer you carry them, the stronger the mold gets. And the stronger the mold gets, the harder it becomes to break free. This is why I've done something I've never done before, Maude. **I'm putting on a 3-day live class. The people who loved me for free were getting the worst version of me.https://www.vinhgiang.com/ Hey Maude, Before we get into this week's memo.. a quick heads up. Something exciting is coming your way later this week. I can't say much yet, but it's the kind of thing you'll want to jump on fast. First come, first serve 🤫 Alright, enough mystery lol onto the memo. I took this photo on the weekend. Nothing special, just me in the backyard, grilling steaks for the family.  But standing there with the tongs in my hand, I couldn't stop thinking about something. The largest audience I've ever spoken to was over 35,000 people in Bangkok... I remember standing backstage, heart going, thinking **this is the biggest moment of my career.** And in many ways, it was. I trained for years to be able to hold a room like that, to move thousands of people with a single story, a well-timed pause, a drop in my voice. I built my whole life around getting better at that. And yet here I am, turning 40 at the end of this year, standing in my backyard in front of the BBQ and an audience of three, my wife and my two kids, Xander and Melody and I'm starting to understand something I wish I'd figured out sooner. The most important stage I'll ever stand on - is this one. For years, I thought the big stages were the ones that mattered most. The conferences. The corporate events. The thousands of people hanging on every word. I poured everything into those performances... my energy, my voice, my presence, my best material. And then I'd come home, walk through the front door, and switch off. The vibrancy in my voice would disappear. The posture, the energy, the fun, all the things I gave so freely to a room full of strangers, I'd pack away the moment I stepped inside my own house. I remember the exact moment I realised I was doing it. My kids were dancing around the living room, using their voices at full volume, laughing, pulling at my arm, asking me to join in. And I was sitting on the couch like a sack of potatoes barely looking at them, zoned out, sedated by the TV. These two little humans were giving me everything they had.. all their energy, all their enthusiasm. And I was giving them the back of my head. That hit me. Here I was, a person who teaches communication for a living, who gets paid to bring energy and presence into a room and the two people who wanted my presence most in that moment were getting the worst version of me. I was giving my **best** performance to people who paid for a ticket, and my **flattest** version to the people who didn't need a ticket because they loved me for free. That's a painful thing to admit. And I don't think I'm the only one who does it. I think a lot of us do this (Right!? Surely I am not the only one lol) not just speakers, but anyone who works hard. You give your best energy to your clients, your customers, your patients, your colleagues. You're switched on all day. And then you come home to the people who matter most, and you give them what's left. The leftovers. The low-energy version. The "I'm just tired" version. I know most of you follow me because you want to get better at communication and I love that. But we almost always think about communication as a professional skill. How do I present better? How do I lead meetings? How do I influence clients? We rarely ask: how do I communicate better with the people I come home to? So this is my reminder for the week, Maude and honestly, it's a reminder to myself as much as it is to you: The people sitting at your dinner table deserve your best communication, not your leftovers. Your audience of thousands will forget you eventually. Your audience at home never will. Give them the good stuff. Seriously, I can’t believe this animal exposed my inadequacies as a father lol https://www.vinhgiang.com/ Hey Maude, I took my family to the zoo recently, and there was a moment that properly annoyed me at the time.. but sitting with it now, I think it might be one of the most important things I've seen in a while. My daughter had the chance to hand-feed a giraffe. I was holding her, encouraging her, telling her it would be fun. She wanted nothing to do with it. Crying. Pulling away. "No, Daddy. No." I kept trying. She kept resisting. Then my wife took her. And she did it. Immediately. Hand out, feeding the giraffe like she'd done it a hundred times. You could see it on her face, she was still concerned the whole time, eyes wide, watching this massive animal eat a tiny leaf right out of her hand. But the moment it was done? All smiles. Laughing. Jumping around. Giggling like it was the greatest thing that had ever happened to her. I laughed it off at the time. But sitting here now, looking at this photo, I feel two things at once, a bit annoyed lol she wouldn't do it with me, and deeply proud of my wife for being the kind of person who makes our kids feel that safe. Me included, honestly. Still, annoyed by the way haha. My daughter wasn't fearless in that moment. She was **held**. My wife made her feel safe in a way that I didn't, and that safety is what gave her the courage to reach out. It wasn't confidence or bravery. It was simpler than that. She just felt like the person holding her had her. And I think this is true for all of us. When you're around people who make you feel safe, you become a bigger version of yourself. You speak up more. You take chances you wouldn't normally take. You reach for things that would terrify you if you were standing there on your own. The safety doesn't remove the fear, it just makes you willing to move through it. But when you're around people who make you feel small, the opposite happens. You shrink. You hold back. You start believing that the cautious version of you is the real one, when really it's just the protected one. I think about this with my own mum. I'm turning 40 this year, and I still feel it, the moment she gives me a hug when I'm not feeling well, something settles. I feel better - instantly. I don't think that ever goes away. The people who make you feel safe leave something in you that stays, no matter how old you get. I've been thinking about this all week. It's easy for me to take credit for the things I've been able to do in my life, the stages I've stood on, the risks I've taken, the things I've built. But I didn't do any of it alone. I did it because I had people around me who made me feel safe enough to try. My wife. My mum and dad. My team. My mates. People who held me steady when the thing in front of me was bigger than I was. So I want you to sit with something this week, Maude: **Look around you. Are the people in your life making you feel safe enough to reach or small enough to stay where you are?** Because the size of what you're willing to attempt has a lot less to do with you than you think. It has everything to do with who's holding you when you try. Choose your holders wisely. P.S. The saddest part of this whole story is that I am clearly not providing my daughter with those feelings of safety I've got some work to do. Dammit. Wish me luck. Are you afraid of the unknown? Have you stopped exploring?https://www.vinhgiang.com/ Hey Maude, Let me show you the first photo. **Crazy fog.** And for some reason it reminded me of a part of myself I haven't thought about in years... I'm a massive gamer at heart. I used to love playing the old Blizzard games: • Starcraft • Warcraft • Diablo The hours I poured into those games… was honestly terrifying lol. But all of those games had a concept called **the "fog of war"**.. Basically, any part of the map you haven't explored yet is completely blacked out. You can't see what's hiding there. Could be an enemy base, could be a gold mine, could be nothing at all. You have no idea until you go look. This is such gamer talk. I'm sure I've lost 99% of you already, but stay with me because this part matters. One of the fastest ways to gain an advantage in those games was to get **map awareness** early. Right at the start, you'd send one of your little characters out into the dark, just running through the fog, revealing what's been hidden. Where are the enemies? Where are the resources? The earlier you explored, the better you played. Now why do I share all this? Lol. Because standing in my garden this morning, staring into the fog, I had this thought: **the map is you.** So many of us have barely explored ourselves. As we get older, we tend to stick to what we know, keep doing the things we've always done, and at some point we stop sending that little character out into the dark. We settle into a small corner of the map and decide that's the whole thing. **"This is just who I am."** I see this all the time when I'm teaching communication. My students say, " **Oh, that's just how I talk.**" And I think.. MATE! That's **one** way you talk. That's one small corner of the map. There are dozens of other ways you could speak, connect, and show up that you've simply never tried because you've never walked over there. And when you're surrounded by that fog of the unknown, it's easy to assume there's nothing else out there. It's easy to believe that what you can see right now is all there is. The fog just means you haven't explored there yet. That's all it is, unexplored territory, waiting…… So this week, I want you to do something that helps you uncover a little more of your map. Say yes to the thing that makes you slightly uncomfortable. Try an approach that feels unfamiliar. Speak in a way you haven't spoken before, even if it feels weird, even if you're not sure it's "you" yet. Because you are far bigger than the version of yourself you keep repeating, Maude. And you'll only find that out by walking into the fog. Go explore. I'll go first. This week, I'm changing my own watch straps. Sounds ridiculous, right? But for the longest time I always took my watches to the watch shop and let someone else do it. This week, I'm doing it myself. Small thing. But then you pull up to your local servo [read: gas station] and it's empty, and suddenly you realise how connected everything actually is. I don't have anything clever to say about the geopolitics of it. I just know that there are people, families, kids, communities, caught in the middle of something they didn't choose. And there are ripple effects reaching places none of us expected. So wherever you are in the world right now, Maude, I'm sending you and your loved ones genuine well wishes. Stay safe. It had **that**smell. You know the one. But here's what I remember most about that day. We didn't talk about what was wrong with it. We sat together and we dreamed. Everyone started throwing out ideas, what tables they wanted, what chairs, what art on the walls, what the room should **feel** like when you walked in. We talked about flooring, monitors, lighting. Hands down this is one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done in my life.https://www.vinhgiang.com/ Hey Maude, As I’m writing this, it’s my last day working on the book. It’s due tonight at midnight. And I can say this honestly: this has been one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done in my career. On stage, I get to use my voice, my eyes, my hands, my whole body to carry an idea. When I communicate live, I have all these tools I’ve spent my entire life sharpening. But on the page? All of that gets taken away. No voice. No body language. Just words. It felt like trying to fight with my hands behind my back, my feet tied together while being punched in the face.  I realised something a bit uncomfortable during this process: My weakness has always been my writing. Not my ability to tell a story out loud, but my ability to tell that same story with **words alone** on a blank page. Over the last 12 months and especially in this final month… this book has forced me to sharpen that axe. Day after day. Hour after hour. https://form.typeform.com/to/JXpAiHDx I’ve been sitting in the same spot, sometimes 10–12 hours a day, just wrestling with sentences. Most days didn’t feel glamorous. Many days didn’t even feel productive. But something unexpected happened. I always thought writing was about getting what’s in your head **onto** the page. What I’ve learned is that writing is actually about getting what’s in your head **clear** **on** the page. When you write something and then read it back, you’re forced to think about your own thinking. You see where you’re vague. You see where you’re contradicting yourself. You see where the idea isn’t as strong as you thought it was. You’re not just editing words, You start to **edit** the way you think. That’s been the biggest gift of this whole book journey for me. Not just that I’ve become a little better at writing… But that I’ve become sharper in how I think, how I explain, how I see the world. So here’s the lesson I want to pass on to you this week: If you want to become a better communicator, leader, partner, parent… don’t just practice talking more. Write more. You don’t need to write a book. Start with a paragraph a day. * What did I learn today? * What am I confused about? * What do I actually believe about this thing I keep talking about? Put it on the page. Then read it back. You’ll start to notice gaps in your logic, places where your values and your actions don’t match, ideas that felt big in your head but fall apart when you try to explain them. And when you fix those on the page, you’re slowly upgrading the way you think  and the way you show up in every conversation. This book has been a crazy milestone for me, Maude. I can’t wait to share it with you when it comes out, but I’m even more grateful for what the process has already given me: a sharper axe, not just for writing, but for thinking. Because the funny thing about growth is that it rarely starts with the lesson itself. It usually starts earlier, in a much quieter moment. The moment where you stop thinking about something and finally say, “Alright… let’s give this a go.” Most of us sit in that in-between space longer than we’d like to admit. I’ve definitely done it. You know the feeling - you’re curious about something, you know it might help, but you keep telling yourself **“maybe later.”** And then when you finally step in… nine times out of ten the response is the same: “I’m really glad I did that.” So Justen, I’m really glad you made that call. And thank you for the kind words about the team too - they pour a ridiculous amount of care into making this whole experience run smoothly. And for anyone reading this who might be hovering on the edge of a decision right now… Sometimes the biggest shifts in our lives begin with something surprisingly small. Just deciding to start. **What I'm pondering** Yup. I’m not going to pretend I’ve been able to stop thinking and experimenting with AI. And now with everything happening with Iran, things feel tense. It’s so easy to get lost in the chaos, refreshing the news and catastrophising in your own mind. I asked my dad for advice the other day. He looked at me and said: **“Think less, boy.”** Classic Dad. I laughed, but he’s right, I live in my head way too much. What I need this week is to get out of my head and back into my hands. For me, that means picking up the bow again. Getting back into archery. When I’m shooting, I’m not doomscrolling or future-tripping…  I’m just here, with my breath, my body, and the target in front of me. Maybe for you it’s not archery. Maybe it’s cooking, music, running, or building something with your kids. It’s been scary waking up early every morning getting sucked into the vortex. https://www.vinhgiang.com/ Hey Maude, If you’ve been reading all the way to the end of my weekly V emails, you might’ve noticed I’ve been **thinking a lot about AI** lately. And honestly… It’s wild. The pace of progress in just the last four weeks has been staggering. Lately, I’ve been asking myself: **What’s my thesis on AI?** **How should I approach it in the work I do?** **And how will it impact my team and me?** Here’s where my thinking is… for now…  I believe in the next six months, people will fall into one of two categories: * **AI literate** * **AI illiterate** If you’re in the second group… you might be in trouble. And even among those who are AI literate, I think we’ll see tiers emerge: * Those who are **okay** with it * Those who are **intermediate** * Those who are **masterful** * And then, those who are truly **elite** How high you climb that ladder will directly shape your **value in the world ahead.** My second big thought: as we move deeper into an AI-driven world, the **human** skills will matter more than ever. The ability to **communicate**, **connect**, and **influence** will become your ultimate moat, the one thing AI can’t truly replicate. You’ve got to get your hands dirty. My team and I have been waking up at 5am every day to play with AI before work. We’re experimenting, testing, breaking things, starting over again. Each week, it’s astonishing to see how far it’s already come, and how much more there is to learn. Final thought… It’s interesting, I speak to a lot of people, and many still have their heads in the sand. Some say it’s too complex. Others are downplaying it. I’m not a doomsdayer. I know because I've heard that voice too. Here's what most people misunderstand about communication: they think the goal is to eliminate fear. It's not. The goal is to speak **through** it. And that's exactly what you did - not to 10 people in a safe room, but to 20,000 worldwide. And then you said something that really got me: **People are already asking me to coach them.** Do you realise what that means? It means your transformation was so visible, so undeniable, that people in the audience didn't just hear your message - they felt your growth. You didn't have to announce it. They saw it. That's when you know the work is real. Not when **you** feel different. When **others** can feel it too. Keep going. Keep coaching. Keep sharing everything you've learned - especially the messy parts. Because the next person standing backstage, heart pounding, wondering if they're ready? They need to hear your story. Seeing full-grown adults being willing to be playful. Adults from all corners of the world embracing play and reconnecting with their inner child. Here's why that matters more than most people realise: When you watch someone who's playful, something interesting happens! You can't look away. They're magnetic. And when you watch someone who's grinding, forcing it, white-knuckling their way through a presentation or a conversation... you want to leave the room. Play does something that effort alone never can: it makes people want to be around you. Think about the best communicators you've ever seen. The ones who made you laugh, made you lean in, made you forget you were even in an audience. Were they trying hard? Or were they playing? The people who play outlast the people who grind. Every time. Because when you're playing, you have access to more of yourself. More energy, more creativity, more range, more joy. And the people around you feel that. They mirror it. They open up. The irony is that most adults think play is the opposite of professionalism. That to be taken seriously, you have to be serious. But the truth is the opposite, the person in the room who's willing to be playful is usually the most confident, the most present, and the most trusted. Play isn't the absence of skill. It's what skill looks like when it's free. So here's my challenge to you this week: the next conversation you walk into; a meeting, a dinner, even a phone call...  ask yourself: **Am I grinding through this, or am I playing?** For the longest time, my parents told me that play is for children. Grow up. Stop being so childish. You're an adult now. But you know what I've learned? There's no such thing as adults. We're all just big kids who forgot we had permission to play. You stepped forward. You let go of the outcome. That's confidence. Not certainty. Not perfection. Participation. And here's what I love most: the more you gave, the more you received. In the last two weeks, my team and I have been playing with it daily. Peter on my team was up at 3am the other day, not working, **experimenting**. I've been in the office at 5am doing the same thing. Why? Because we can't stop. What we're seeing is... hard to describe. Things that took hours now take minutes. Things that seemed impossible six months ago are now routine. How do I feel about it? 50% scared. 50% excited. Six months ago, it was 10% scared and 90% excited. That shift happened fast. And I think if you're paying attention, you've felt it too. Here's what I keep coming back to: the things AI will never replicate are the things most people have stopped practising, connection, presence, the ability to make another human being feel **seen**. The stuff we teach at STAGE. I used to think communication skills were important. Now I think they might be the last human skill.  More on this soon.
